Compare gas and wood-fired pizza ovens
In this category you compare outdoor pizza ovens on gas and multi-fuel pizza ovens that you fire with wood or charcoal. The Power source filter shows only the gas ovens or only the multi-fuel ovens, and the Pizza size filter helps you pick the size. All pizza ovens and accessories together are under pizza ovens.
Gas pizza ovens
A gas oven, such as the Ooni Koda or the Witt Etna and Piccolo, heats up quickly and is easy to control with a dial. You need a gas cylinder and a matching regulator. Some ovens come in a 30 mbar version and a 37 mbar version: choose the one that matches your cylinder and regulator. In the Netherlands 30 mbar is usual, in Belgium often 37 mbar.
Multi-fuel pizza ovens for wood and charcoal
A multi-fuel oven, such as the Ooni Karu, is fired with small pieces of wood or with charcoal. Lighting and tending the fire takes more attention, but you bake over a real fire. A separate gas burner is sold for the Karu, so you can bake on gas as well.
What to look for
- Size: 12 inch for pizzas up to about 30 cm, 16 inch for pizzas up to about 40 cm.
- Weight: a light oven is easier to take with you, for example to the campsite.
- Stone: with a rotating stone, as on the Witt Rotante models, you need to turn the pizza yourself less often.
Safe use
Only use a pizza oven outdoors, on a stable surface and away from anything that can catch fire. With gas, check the connection for leaks with soapy water and let the oven cool down before you cover it. Covers, peels and stones are under pizza oven accessories.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a pizza oven need to preheat?
Usually around fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the oven, the fuel and the weather. An infrared thermometer shows you when the stone is hot enough. The manual of the model gives the recommended time.
Can I use a wood-fired pizza oven on gas?
With a multi-fuel oven such as the Ooni Karu you can, using a gas burner that is sold separately. An oven made only for gas or only for wood cannot simply be converted. Only use parts that the manufacturer offers for your model.
What does 30 mbar or 37 mbar mean for a gas oven?
It is the gas pressure the oven is designed for. In the Netherlands a 30 mbar regulator is usually used, in Belgium often 37 mbar. Choose the version that matches your regulator and cylinder and follow the manual.
