Pizza oven accessories: stones, peels, covers and tables
With the right pizza oven accessories, baking in a pizza oven becomes easier. Here you compare pizza stones, pizza peels, turning peels, infrared thermometers, covers and tables, with the current price at the shop. The ovens themselves are under gas and wood-fired pizza ovens.
Which accessories are there?
- Pizza peel: for sliding the pizza into the oven and taking it out. A perforated aluminium or steel peel lets excess flour fall away, a wooden or bamboo peel is handy for topping the pizza.
- Turning peel: a small round peel with a long handle for turning the pizza inside the oven.
- Pizza stone: a stone for the oven, or a stone for use on the barbecue.
- Infrared thermometer: measures the temperature of the stone without touching it.
- Cover or carry bag: protects the oven from rain, dust and dirt, or lets you take it with you.
- Table: a sturdy work surface at a comfortable height, with room for the peel and the ingredients.
Does it fit your oven?
Covers, carry bags and stones are often made for one model, such as the Ooni Koda 12, Koda 16 or Karu 12. Check the title and the specifications to see which model and size an accessory is meant for. Choose a peel that fits easily through the opening of your oven.
Tips for use
Only put the cover on once the oven has cooled down completely. Place a table with the oven on a level, firm surface and keep it away from anything that can catch fire. Pizza accessories for the barbecue and the kamado are under barbecue pizza accessories.
Frequently asked questions
Which pizza peel do I need?
For sliding the pizza in and out, a thin aluminium or steel peel is handy; a perforated peel lets excess flour fall away, so less of it burns on the stone. A wooden or bamboo peel is nice for topping the pizza. A small turning peel lets you turn the pizza inside the oven.
Why an infrared thermometer?
An infrared thermometer measures the temperature of the stone without touching it. That way you know when the oven is ready and whether the stone is hot enough again between two pizzas.
Can I use a pizza stone on the barbecue?
Some pizza stones are made for the barbecue, such as the glazed pizza stones from Weber. Put the stone on the grate, let it heat up together with the barbecue and follow the manual. A cold stone that suddenly goes onto a very hot spot can crack.
