Comparing garden tools: mowing, pruning and watering
Good garden tools make the difference between an afternoon of hard graft and a garden that stays tidy without fuss. On this page you can compare lawn mowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, pruning tools, leaf blowers, pressure washers, hand tools and watering equipment from well known brands such as Gardena, Fiskars, Felco, Makita, Bosch, Husqvarna and Kärcher. Each product shows the specifications and the current price at the shop. Use the filters to quickly narrow down by type, drive, voltage and size.
Which garden tools do you need?
This mainly depends on what is growing in your garden. A few questions can help with choosing:
- Do you have grass? Then a lawn mower is the basis, with a grass trimmer for the edges along borders and paving. A scarifier removes moss and thatch from the lawn in spring.
- Do you have a hedge, shrubs or trees? A hedge trimmer keeps the hedge in shape. For loose branches and shrubs, use pruning tools: pruning shears for thin branches, loppers or a pruning saw for thicker wood.
- Do you have borders or a vegetable garden? Then hand tools such as a spade, rake and hoe come in handy, as does a wheelbarrow for moving soil and prunings.
- Do you have a patio or a lot of fallen leaves? A pressure washer cleans paving, wood and garden furniture, and a leaf blower sweeps leaves together in a few minutes.
- Do you need to water often? Then take a look at watering: garden hoses, hose reels, sprinklers and irrigation computers.
Manual, electric, cordless or petrol?
With machines, the drive type is the most important choice. Corded electric is usually the most affordable and needs no battery, but the cable determines how far you can reach and you need to be careful not to mow over it. Battery (cordless) power has no cable and is quiet, and nowadays it is the most popular drive type for the average garden. How much you can do on a single charge depends on the voltage and the capacity of the battery (in Ah). Petrol has the most stamina for large areas, but makes more noise and requires more maintenance. Smaller lawns can also be kept tidy with a manual cylinder mower, without electricity or fuel.
If you choose cordless, look at the battery platform. Brands such as Makita, Bosch, Gardena, Einhell and Greenworks use the same battery across all their machines within a battery platform. If you already have a drill or other tool from that brand, the battery will often also fit the lawn mower or hedge trimmer. Versions with "solo", "basic body" or "excl. battery" in the name are supplied without a battery and charger and are therefore cheaper. With the Battery included filter, you can immediately see which models come with a battery.
What to look out for per type
With a lawn mower, the cutting width and the size of the lawn are the most important factors: the wider the mower, the fewer passes needed. A robot lawn mower mows independently within a boundary and is suitable for anyone who wants to hand over the mowing entirely. With a hedge trimmer, check the blade length and the maximum branch thickness, and with a chainsaw, check the bar length. For pruning shears (secateurs), the difference between bypass (two blades sliding past each other, for live wood) and anvil (one blade against a flat surface, for dead and hard wood) matters. With a garden hose, choose a length that reaches the furthest corner of the garden, with some slack.
Brands in this comparison
For hand tools and pruning, you will find Felco, Fiskars, Wolf-Garten, Spear & Jackson and Talen Tools, among others. For mowing, trimming and pruning with a motor, you can compare Makita, Einhell, Bosch, Husqvarna, Greenworks and AL-KO. For watering and cleaning, there are products from Gardena, Hozelock and Kärcher. Each brand page shows all the products from that brand together.
Comparing prices
The prices on this page are updated daily. Each product shows the current price at the shop and, where available, the price history. This way you can see whether a deal is genuinely good value. Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum garden tool kit you need?
For an ordinary garden with grass and borders, you can get a long way with a lawn mower, a grass trimmer or grass shears for the edges, pruning shears, a spade, a rake and a garden hose. If you have a hedge, you will also need a hedge trimmer.
Is cordless garden equipment better than corded?
A battery gives more freedom and is quieter, while a cable is more affordable and has no limited run time. For most gardens, cordless tools are a pleasant choice, especially if you use several appliances from the same battery platform.
Can I use one battery for several appliances?
Yes, if the appliances are from the same brand and battery platform. Brands such as Makita, Bosch, Gardena, Einhell and Greenworks use the same battery across all machines within a battery platform. Models with 'solo', 'basic body' or 'excl. battery' are supplied without a battery and charger.
What is the difference between a spade and a shovel?
A spade has a flat, straight blade for digging and edging. A shovel has a wider, curved blade for moving soil, sand or compost.
Do I buy the garden tools through Boender Outdoor?
No. Boender Outdoor compares prices and does not sell anything itself. The button on a product takes you to the shop, where you order with that shop's delivery and warranty.
