Compare Makita garden tools: LXT and XGT battery
Makita is a Japanese brand that started in 1915 and is best known for electric tools for construction. The brand also makes a large range of garden tools, most of them cordless. On this page you compare Makita's garden machines with the current price at the shop. Drills and other indoor tools are not included here.
What can you find from Makita?
- Lawn mowers: cordless lawn mowers from 33 to 53 cm, corded electric mowers, a robot lawn mower and scarifiers.
- Hedge trimmers on battery and corded, and cordless grass shears.
- Pruning tools: chainsaws, small cordless pruning saws for fruit trees and shrubs, telescopic saws and cordless pruning shears.
- Grass trimmers and brush cutters and leaf blowers.
- Pressure washers on mains power.
LXT, XGT and CXT
Makita has three battery systems. LXT is the 18V line and the largest: many heavier machines use two 18V batteries at once, recognisable by "2x18V" or "36V" in the name. XGT is the 40V Max line with more power in one battery. CXT is the compact 12V Max line for light jobs. Batteries only fit within their own line. If you already have Makita tools, check which system your batteries belong to.
Makita machines with a Z in the type code, or with "body" or "basic body" in the title, are supplied without battery and charger. Sets often have a code with the battery capacity, such as RT (5.0 Ah) or RF (3.0 Ah). With the Battery included filter you can see this in one go.
How to compare Makita
This brand page brings together all the Makita products we compare. With the filters you can choose by type, drive and, for machines, by voltage and whether the battery is included. Sort by price to put the most affordable models at the top, or by popularity to see which models visitors view most often at a shop. On the product page you can see the full specifications.
Pruning and sawing with Makita
Makita has a lot of cordless tools for pruning. Small cordless pruning saws with a blade of 10 to 15 cm are lightweight and can be operated with one hand, suitable for fruit trees, shrubs and branches that are too thick for shears. For trunks and thicker branches there are chainsaws with a longer blade, cordless or corded. With a telescopic saw you can saw branches high in the tree without a ladder. The cordless pruning shears are intended for those who need to do a lot of cutting, such as in an orchard or vineyard: the motor does the work, so your hand gets less tired. When sawing, always wear gloves and safety glasses, and keep the chain sharp and properly tensioned.
Comparing prices
For every Makita product you see the current price at the shop. Prices are updated daily and, where available, you can also see the price history, so you can tell whether a deal is genuinely good value. If you want to wait for a model to become cheaper, set a price alert on the product page. You always order directly from the shop. You can find more brands and types at garden tools.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Z after a Makita type code mean?
A Z, or "body" or "basic body" in the title, means that the machine is supplied without battery and charger. Handy if you already have Makita batteries.
What is the difference between LXT and XGT?
LXT is Makita's 18V line, where heavier machines use two batteries at once. XGT is the 40V Max line with more power per battery. The batteries are not interchangeable between the two lines.
Will my Makita drill battery fit a lawn mower?
If it is an 18V LXT battery, it will fit the LXT garden machines. For machines that take two batteries, you will need two.
Does Makita also have corded garden tools?
Yes. There are corded electric lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, trimmers, scarifiers and pressure washers.
