Barilo 2.0 charcoal barbecue + rotisserie – Entertaining for 20 people with Italian design
The Boretti Barilo 2.0 charcoal barbecue is an impressive piece for anyone who wants to barbecue on a grand scale. This Dutch brand with Italian design, which you may know from The Great Garden Makeover, has created a complete barbecuing solution with this model for large-scale garden entertaining. With a grilling surface of no less than 87 by 41 centimetres, you can effortlessly prepare dishes for twenty people at once, and thanks to the included rotisserie, you can even turn whole pork loins or chickens to perfection.
The Barilo 2.0 distinguishes itself through its professional appearance and sturdy construction with cast iron grates that hold heat optimally and create those characteristic grill marks on your meat. The barbecue measures 105 centimetres wide, 107 centimetres high and 52 centimetres deep, so you're placing a truly imposing statement piece in your garden. The combination of direct and indirect grilling makes this a versatile appliance with which you can both sear quickly and smoke or cook slowly.
Features & advantages of the Barilo 2.0 charcoal barbecue
Cast iron grates for restaurant quality
The cast iron grilling grates of the Barilo 2.0 are the beating heart of this barbecue. Cast iron heats evenly and retains that heat for a long time, so your meat, fish and vegetables get a perfect searing with those famous criss-cross grill marks that you normally only see in a steakhouse. Moreover, the natural non-stick coating that develops over time ensures you're less likely to stick and the flavour improves from one grilling session to the next.
Rotisserie for spectacular dishes
The included rotisserie takes your barbecuing experience to the next level. With it, you can slowly turn whole chickens, pork roulade or even a gyros above glowing charcoal, so the meat cooks evenly all around and the fat drips off nicely. The result is a crispy exterior with a tender, juicy interior – ideal for those moments when you really want to impress your guests at a summer garden party.
Huge grilling surface for 20 people
With its grilling grate of 87 by 41 centimetres, you have over 3500 square centimetres of grilling surface. That means you can cook for a whole gathering at once: twenty burgers, thirty sausages, or a combination of spare ribs, vegetables and halloumi without having to work in shifts. For organisers of garden parties, family gatherings or neighbourhood barbecues, this is a lifesaver that makes the difference between enjoying the meal together or standing behind the barbecue for hours.
Direct and indirect grilling in one barbecue
The Barilo 2.0 offers the flexibility to grill both directly and indirectly, which is essential for varied cooking. You use direct grilling for steaks, burgers and vegetables that need to be ready quickly at high temperature, while indirect grilling is perfect for spare ribs, pulled pork or whole chickens that need hours at a lower temperature. By placing the charcoal on one side and your ingredients on the other, you transform this barbecue into a smoker.
Robust dimensions and stable construction
With a total width of 105 centimetres and a height of 107 centimetres, the Barilo 2.0 has an impressive presence that immediately makes clear this is no ordinary barbecue. The depth of 52 centimetres provides plenty of space to spread your charcoal optimally and create different heat zones. The Boretti design combines Italian elegance with Dutch quality, resulting in a barbecue that not only looks beautiful but also lasts for years.
Applications
Direct grilling for quick, flavourful dishes
With direct grilling, you place your ingredients right above the hot charcoal for intense heat and short cooking time. The Barilo 2.0's cast iron grates get glowing hot and immediately seal the pores of your meat, keeping all the juices inside. Perfect for rib-eye steaks, lamb chops, prawns, peppers and courgettes. The large grilling surface means you can grill for your entire party at once without the temperature dropping drastically.
Indirect grilling and smoking for low-and-slow recipes
By stacking the charcoal on one or both sides and placing your meat in the middle, you create an indirect heat zone that's ideal for larger pieces of meat that need to cook slowly. Add some smoking wood to your charcoal and you have a proper smoker with which you can prepare beef brisket, pulled pork or spare ribs for hours. The spacious interior height of the Barilo 2.0 provides plenty of room for a whole chicken rack or even multiple layers of spare ribs.
Rotisserie for festive main courses
The rotisserie opens up a world of possibilities for spectacular dishes your guests won't soon forget. Thread a whole chicken onto the spit, season it generously and let it slowly rotate whilst the skin turns golden brown and crispy. Shawarma, gyros or a rotating pork loin with herb butter are also beautiful applications. The advantage of the rotisserie is that the meat cooks evenly all around and excess fat drips off, resulting in a healthier and more flavourful end result.
Assembly & use
The Boretti Barilo 2.0 comes with clear assembly instructions, and although the barbecue is impressive in size, assembly requires no special tools or skills. Do plan an hour to assemble all the parts correctly, and perhaps ask a second pair of hands to hold the heavier parts in place. Make sure you place the barbecue on a flat, stable surface, preferably on patio tiles or a concrete surface, and keep sufficient distance from flammable materials such as wooden fences or overhanging branches.
For first use, it is essential to season the cast iron grates. Rub them with a high-temperature oil such as sunflower oil, light a good amount of charcoal and let the barbecue warm up at high temperature for at least an hour. This process prepares the grates for use and creates a natural non-stick coating. After each grilling session, you can best clean the grates with a steel grilling brush while they're still warm, and occasionally apply a thin layer of oil again to prevent rust. You can clean the rest of the barbecue with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid.
Outside the barbecuing season, it is recommended to cover the Barilo 2.0 with a suitable protective cover or store it in a dry shed or garage. Although Boretti barbecues are built to withstand the elements, good protection significantly extends the lifespan. At the start of the season, check all moving parts such as the rotisserie mechanism and lubricate the pivot points if necessary. At Boender Outdoor, spare parts and accessories are available should you want to replace or upgrade anything.
Frequently asked questions
How much charcoal do I need for a grilling session?
For an average grilling session of about two hours, you can count on 2 to 3 kilogrammes of charcoal, depending on whether you're grilling directly or indirectly. For prolonged indirect grilling or smoking, this can increase to 5 kilogrammes or more. Start with a good base of glowing charcoal and top up with new briquettes during longer sessions to keep the temperature stable.
Can I also use the Barilo 2.0 as a smoker?
Absolutely! By placing the charcoal on one side and adding smoking wood (chunks or chips), you transform this barbecue into an effective smoker. The large surface and the ability to regulate air supply make it perfectly possible to smoke for hours at a low temperature (110-130°C). Spare ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket work excellently on the Barilo 2.0.
Are the cast iron grates dishwasher safe?
No, cast iron grates absolutely do not belong in the dishwasher. The heat and aggressive cleaning products damage the natural protective coating and cause rust. Clean the grates after use with a grilling brush while they're still warm, and occasionally rub them with a little oil. This simple care ensures they last for generations.
Is the rotisserie electric or manual?
The rotisserie of the Barilo 2.0 is electrically driven, so your meat keeps turning continuously and evenly without you having to stand by it constantly. You do need a power socket near your barbecue
