Step 1: Vacuum first
Have your cushions been lying outside for a while? Then it's smart to vacuum them thoroughly first. Dust, sand and other loose dirt accumulate especially in the seams and edges. By removing this first, you'll get a better view of any stains and prevent dirt from being rubbed further into the fabric during cleaning.
Light stains? Use water and mild soap
For small and light stains, you don't need aggressive cleaning products. A solution of lukewarm water with a little eco-friendly soap or washing-up liquid is often enough. Gently dab the stain with a soft, damp cloth. Don't rub, as this can damage the fabric. Then let the cushion dry well in the air.
Tackling moderate stains
Sometimes you're dealing with rather stubborn stains. Fortunately, there are then various options.
Textile cleaner
A special textile cleaner is ideal for this type of stain. Spray the product onto the stain, let it soak for a moment and then dab clean with a damp cloth. Then let the cushion dry well.
Baking soda
For colourfast fabrics, you can also make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply this to the stain, let it work for a moment and then dab clean. Note: baking soda has a slight bleaching effect. Therefore, test it first on an inconspicuous spot of the cushion.
Stubborn stains? These are your options
Washing machine
Do you have a removable cover? Then you can usually safely wash it at 30 degrees. First close the zip and turn the cover inside out. Pre-treat any visible stains with a little mild soap or textile cleaner. Then let the cover air dry, not in the tumble dryer.
Dry cleaner
Can't you remove the cover, or would you prefer to leave it to a professional? Then the dry cleaner is a good choice. Many dry cleaners offer special cleaning programmes for garden textiles. Just ask beforehand what options are available.
Removing green algae
Green algae often occurs due to damp conditions. Fortunately, this is easy to clean with a solution of lukewarm water and eco-friendly soap. Remove the cover if possible. Scrub away the algae with a sponge and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Does your cushion have a removable cover? Then after treatment you can also wash it in the washing machine according to the instructions above.
Mould? Treat with vinegar
Although many garden cushions nowadays are well resistant to mould formation, it can still happen. Especially if dirt or moisture remains for a long time. In that case, make a mixture of water and cleaning vinegar. For light fabrics you can optionally also add a little bleach. Spray the solution onto the cushion and let it soak for approximately 15 minutes. Then clean with a sponge and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Let the cushion dry completely before using or storing it again.
