Outdoor flower pots compared: round, bowl-shaped and square
An outdoor flower pot comes in many shapes: round, bowl-shaped, tapered, egg-shaped or square. On this page you compare flower pots, from small pots for herbs to pots for a shrub or small tree, with the current price at the shop. You will find every type together under planters and flower pots.
Shape and size
Choose a pot a few centimetres wider than the root ball. With bowl-shaped and egg-shaped pots, look at the opening: it is narrower than the widest diameter, so a large root ball is harder to get in and, later, out again. Cylindrical and tapered pots are easier when repotting. The diameter filter shows only pots in the size you are looking for.
Material and frost
Plastic pots are light and do not break easily, such as the Elho Sereh and the UV-resistant Elho June, or the bowl-shaped Groove and Rib pots from Capi Europe. Fibreclay looks like stone but weighs less; you will find plenty of it at Pottery Pots, such as the Patt and Charlie pots. If the pot is to stay outside in winter, check that it is frost-resistant and has a drainage hole in the base. Pot feet underneath let the water drain away.
Filtering
Filter by material, colour, diameter and brand, or choose self-watering if you want to water less often. A saucer under the pot catches excess water, but empty it after a downpour, otherwise the roots still end up sitting in water. To group several pots together, choose different heights in one material or colour: it looks calm and playful at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
How much bigger than the root ball should a flower pot be?
Allow a few extra centimetres around and below the root ball, so fresh compost fits in. When repotting, you usually choose a pot one or two sizes larger.
Can a flower pot stay outside all winter?
That depends on the material. Plastic and fibreclay usually cope well with frost; with ceramic it varies per pot. A drainage hole stops water freezing inside the pot.
Does an outdoor flower pot need a hole?
Yes, otherwise rainwater collects and the roots rot. Check the product details to see whether there is a drainage hole or whether you can make one yourself.
