Large outdoor pots and planters: compare sizes and materials

A large planter gives a small tree, a big shrub or a clump of ornamental grass plenty of room, and instantly becomes a focal point on the patio. This category includes pots and planters from roughly 50 cm in diameter, 100 cm in length or 60 cm in height, with the current price at the shop. Smaller sizes are under planters and flower pots.

Weight and moving

The bigger the pot, the heavier it gets once filled with wet soil. So put it in its final spot before you fill it. Light materials such as plastic and fibreclay make things easier; a heavy pot, on the other hand, stays steadier in the wind, which helps with a tall plant.

Filling and drainage

A drainage hole matters even more in a large pot, as it holds a lot of water. A layer of clay pebbles at the bottom helps the water drain and saves weight. Leave enough room for the roots: a tree needs a generous amount of compost. In a large pot the root ball is also better protected against frost and drought than in a small one.
