Rectangular and square outdoor planters: compare and choose
A rectangular planter is ideal for a row of plants along the patio, a hedge in a trough or herbs by the kitchen door. Square planters look good in pairs beside a door or at the corners of a patio. On this page you compare rectangular and square planters with the current price at the shop. You will find every type under planters and flower pots.
Length, width and depth
With the length filter you can choose anything from short troughs up to 40 cm to planters of 100 cm and longer. Look at the width and height too: a narrow, low trough is enough for herbs and summer bedding, but for shrubs or a hedge choose a wider, deeper planter that holds more compost. A tall planter also works as a screen on the patio.
Material and examples
Capi Europe has plastic planters in Terrazzo and Arc Granite finishes, in low and tall versions. At Elho you will find the Vivo Next Lang and Vierkant, the Vibia Campana Trough and the Green Basics Garden XXL, among others. Ecopots has the Paris and Bruges, Pottery Pots the Block and Jort. Square planters with a reservoir are available from Lechuza, such as the Cube and Cubico.
Make sure a long planter drains well too: water that collects in one corner makes the roots rot there. Put a long planter in place before filling it, because it becomes heavy once full of soil.
A long planter is also handy for a small kitchen garden on the patio or balcony, with lettuce, strawberries or herbs. Choose one with enough depth and put it in a sunny spot. Combine the length filter with material and colour to find a suitable planter quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a planter be?
For herbs and summer bedding, a low trough is usually enough. Shrubs, ornamental grasses and hedging need more root space, so choose a deeper and wider planter for them.
Can I grow a hedge in a planter?
Yes, in a long, deep planter with enough compost and a drainage hole. Water well in dry spells, because a planter dries out faster than open ground.
How do I filter by planter length?
Use the length filter. It lets you pick a length band, from short troughs up to 40 cm to planters of 100 cm and longer.
