Compare Petromax fire bowls and fire pits

Petromax is a German brand for outdoor cooking. Its fire pits and fire bowls are made both for sitting around and for cooking on. On this page you compare Petromax products with the key specifications and the current price at the shop. Boender Outdoor does not sell anything itself: you always order from the shop, with its delivery and terms.

The Petromax models

  • Pyron: a fire pit the manufacturer describes as low-smoke, also in black.
  • Tyropit: a fire bowl that burns low-smoke according to the manufacturer, also in black, with a matching cover.
  • Atago: fire bowl and grill in one, with a griddle plate and grill grates, including an insert grate.
  • fs38 and fs48: grill and fire bowls on legs of 38 and 48 cm, which you can also use as a griddle.

Cooking over the fire

For cooking over an open fire, Petromax makes a tripod from which you hang a 56 cm hanging griddle or a 50 cm hanging grill grate. With the blowpipe you blow air into the fire where you need it, for example when lighting. Accessories are made per model, so check the title to see whether a griddle or grate fits your Atago.

What to look for when choosing

If you mainly want to sit by the fire with less smoke, look at the Pyron or the Tyropit; the Low-smoke filter shows these models together. A low-smoke fire pit still produces some smoke, especially when lighting and with damp wood. If you mainly want to cook, the Atago and the fs38 and fs48 are a logical choice, as you can use them as a grill or griddle. Compare the size with your patio and the number of people using the Diameter filter.

Care

There is a matching cover for the Tyropit. Only put it on once the fire bowl has cooled down completely. Store the other models dry after use or cover them too, so that rainwater does not collect in them, and only throw away the ash once it is completely cold. Clean griddles and grill grates after cooking as the manual describes.

Using it safely

Only use a fire pit or fire bowl outdoors in the open air, not under a canopy, pergola, parasol or awning, and never indoors or in a tent. Keep a generous distance from your house, trees, hedges and fences, and follow the manual. Place it on a stable, non-combustible surface, not on wooden decking. Burn dry, untreated wood, never use methylated spirits on a burning fire, keep watch and keep water or sand close by. Local rules on fires apply, and in the Netherlands a stookalert from the RIVM may be in force.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Petromax Pyron still produce smoke?

Yes, a little. The manufacturer describes the Pyron as low-smoke: it produces less smoke, but when lighting and with damp wood you will see more. Burn dry, untreated wood and follow the manual.

What can the Petromax Atago do?

The Atago is a fire bowl and grill in one. With the matching griddle plate and grill grates you cook over the fire, and without accessories you use it as a fire bowl.

Can I use the Petromax fs38 or fs48 as a griddle?

Yes, the fs38 and fs48 grill and fire bowls on legs work as a fire bowl and also as a griddle. The manual explains how.
