What is a chip feeder?

A chip feeder is a small opening or tube in the charcoal basket that lets you add extra smoking wood chips during cooking without opening the lid. This is especially handy during long low-and-slow sessions: every time you open the lid, you lose heat and disturb temperature stability. With a chip feeder, this process stays undisturbed.

Cleaning with ash tools and an ash scoop

Once your kamado has cooled down, remove the leftover ash easily with an ash tool and an ash scoop. A combined set is the most convenient option: the ash tool loosens the ash, the scoop collects and removes it via the ash tray. Regular cleaning prevents built-up ash from blocking airflow and keeps your kamado performing optimally — a kamado with a clogged ash tray draws air poorly, making it harder to reach high temperatures.

Maintenance schedule

• After every session — close the air vents to extinguish the charcoal and let it cool down completely
• Before your next session — remove old ash with the ash tool and scoop to make room for fresh charcoal
• Periodically — check the charcoal basket for warping or corrosion, especially with intensive use
