The grill grate or griddle plate is the heart of your barbecue experience — it determines how evenly meat, fish and vegetables cook and how good those grill marks look. At Boender Outdoor you'll find replacement grates and griddle plates for Boretti gas barbecues and Keij Kamado, plus plate setters for indirect grilling. Also check out the full range of accessories.
Cast iron or stainless steel?
| Material | Advantages | Things to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Cast iron | Holds heat longer, deep grill marks, the classic choice for steak | Oil and dry after use to prevent rust |
| Stainless steel | Low maintenance, corrosion-resistant, heats up faster | Holds heat slightly shorter than cast iron |
| Griddle plate (plancha) | Ideal for small pieces, fish, prawns and vegetables | Less suited to classic grill marks |
Plate setter for your kamado
Want to cook indirectly on your Keij Kamado — for pulled pork, spare ribs or a whole chicken, for example? Then you'll need a plate setter (heat deflector). You place this between the coals and the grate so the meat isn't cooking directly over the fire but through convection heat instead — much like an oven. Available in ceramic and metal, in Compact (15"), Large (20/21") and XL (23/25") sizes. Also check out our pizza stones, which work the same way to give steady bottom heat when baking pizza.
Choose your grate or plate by dish
- Steak, burgers, chicken — go for a cast iron or stainless steel grate for classic grill marks and a caramelised crust
- Prawns, fish fillet, small vegetables — a griddle plate stops smaller pieces from falling through the gaps
- Large vegetable pieces (courgette, peppers) — a grate gives more smoky flavour thanks to direct contact with the fire
- Eggs, pancakes, roast potatoes — only suitable for a griddle plate
Grill elevator and extra height adjustment
A grill elevator raises the grate closer to the lid, creating extra space for large cuts of meat or several levels at once — handy during a busy kamado session with multiple dishes.
Caring for grates and griddle plates
The best time to clean a grate is right after use, while it's still warm — residue comes off much more easily then with a grill brush. Lightly oil cast iron afterwards to prevent rust and store it dry. Need more accessories? Check out our BBQ covers and tool sets.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a grate and a plate setter?
A grate is the cooking surface you place food directly on. A plate setter (or heat deflector) is a heat shield you place under the grate to block the direct flame, letting you cook indirectly — similar to an oven.
How do I stop my cast iron grate from rusting?
Always dry the grate thoroughly after cleaning and lightly oil it with a neutral oil before storing it. Keep it somewhere dry and cover your barbecue with a cover when not in use.
Can I use a universal grate on any barbecue?
Not always — grates vary in size and mounting depending on brand and model. For the best result, we recommend a grate made specifically to fit your kamado or barbecue model.
What is a griddle plate (plancha) and what's it used for?
A griddle plate is a solid metal surface instead of a slatted grate. Ideal for smaller items like prawns, vegetables or eggs that would otherwise fall through the gaps in a grate.
Why would I use a grill elevator?
A grill elevator raises the grate closer to the lid, creating extra space underneath — handy when you want to cook larger cuts of meat or multiple levels at once.
Which material gives the best grill marks?
Cast iron generally gives the deepest, darkest grill marks thanks to better heat retention. Stainless steel grates also perform well, though slightly less pronounced.
