Buy a BBQ Cover? Protect Your Barbecue from Wind and Weather

A good BBQ cover is the cheapest way to keep your barbecue in top condition for years. Rain, UV rays and dirt attack grates, burners and housing when a barbecue is left outside unprotected. At Boender Outdoor you'll find covers to fit Boretti gas barbecues, charcoal barbecues and Keij Kamado models. Also check out the full range of accessories.

Why use a BBQ cover?

  • Protection from rain and moisture — prevents rust on grates, burners and frame
  • UV protection — prevents discolouring and cracking of plastic parts and the lid
  • Longer lifespan — a covered barbecue demonstrably lasts longer than an unprotected one
  • Clean start every time — no leaves, dust or insects when you next use it
  • Keeps your warranty intact — some manufacturer warranties on surface corrosion are voided if there's demonstrably no protection used

Cover for an outdoor kitchen or built-in barbecue

Do you have an outdoor kitchen with a built-in gas barbecue? There are matching cover sheets for these too, closing specifically around the cooking area, so the worktop itself doesn't necessarily need covering — natural stone and stainless steel are already very weather-resistant.

Material and quality features

High-quality BBQ covers are made from waterproof, weather-resistant polyester (often 300D or higher) with a breathable construction, so condensation doesn't form under the cover. Look out for the following features:

  • Waterproofing — a PU coating on the inside keeps rain out
  • Breathable panels or a vent — prevents mould from trapped moisture
  • Reinforced hem with drawcord or velcro strap — keeps the cover in place in the wind
  • UV stabilisation — stops the material itself from becoming brittle and tearing

Using a cover: practical tips

  1. Let the barbecue cool down completely before covering it
  2. Don't remove loose parts such as grates — the cover protects the whole unit
  3. Make sure the cover fits snugly so wind can't get underneath
  4. Clean the cover itself occasionally with a damp cloth, especially the bottom, where splashes tend to dry on

Frequently asked questions

Should I always cover my barbecue?

Yes, we always recommend doing this when the barbecue is not in use, even if it stands under a canopy. A cover protects against moisture, dust and UV rays, considerably extending the life of grates, burners and housing.

How do I know which size I need?

Check the dimensions of your model (width x depth x height) and compare them to the cover's size chart. For the Keij Kamado this depends on the kamado size (Compact 15", Large 21" or XL 23"), for Boretti gas barbecues it depends on the specific model number.

Can I cover the barbecue straight after use?

No, let the barbecue cool down completely first. A cover over a still-warm barbecue can melt or trap condensation, which actually speeds up rust formation.

Are BBQ covers waterproof?

Most covers are made from waterproof, weather-resistant polyester. When buying, look for a breathable construction so any moisture that gets in can evaporate again instead of forming condensation.

Can I use a universal cover for any brand?

That's possible, but a model-specific cover closes better around wheels, side tables and handles, giving better protection and less flapping in the wind.

How do I prevent mould forming under the cover?

Choose a cover with breathable panels or a vent, and make sure the barbecue is completely dry and cool before covering it. Occasionally remove the cover to air it out, especially after a long wet spell.
