Cover for an outdoor kitchen or built-in barbecue

Do you have an outdoor kitchen with a built-in gas barbecue? There are matching cover sheets for these too, closing specifically around the cooking area, so the worktop itself doesn't necessarily need covering — natural stone and stainless steel are already very weather-resistant.

Material and quality features

High-quality BBQ covers are made from waterproof, weather-resistant polyester (often 300D or higher) with a breathable construction, so condensation doesn't form under the cover. Look out for the following features:

• Waterproofing — a PU coating on the inside keeps rain out
• Breathable panels or a vent — prevents mould from trapped moisture
• Reinforced hem with drawcord or velcro strap — keeps the cover in place in the wind
• UV stabilisation — stops the material itself from becoming brittle and tearing

Using a cover: practical tips

1. Let the barbecue cool down completely before covering it
2. Don't remove loose parts such as grates — the cover protects the whole unit
3. Make sure the cover fits snugly so wind can't get underneath
4. Clean the cover itself occasionally with a damp cloth, especially the bottom, where splashes tend to dry on
