Compare Therm-a-Rest sleeping mats and sleeping bags
Therm-a-Rest is an American brand known for self-inflating sleeping mats and light air mats. The brand also makes sleeping bags and quilts. On this page you compare Therm-a-Rest sleeping mats and sleeping bags with the current price at the shop.
What will you find from Therm-a-Rest?
- Air mats: the NeoAir XLite, XTherm, Venture and Topo Luxe, and the NeoLoft.
- Self-inflating mats: the ProLite, ProLite Apex, Trail Pro, Trail Lite, Trail Scout, Trail King, BaseCamp, LuxuryMap, Tourlite and MondoKing 3D.
- Foam mats: the Z Lite and RidgeRest.
- Sleeping bags and quilts: the Questar, Vesper, Hyperion, Boost, Ohm and Polar Ranger.
The R-value
Therm-a-Rest mats often list the R-value: how well the mat insulates against the cold ground. The higher the number, the warmer you lie. For a summer campsite a mat with a low R-value is enough, while for spring, autumn or the mountains you choose a higher one. The XTherm is made for cold nights, the XLite for people who want to travel light. Keep in mind that the ground draws warmth away from your body, so a good mat matters just as much as a warm sleeping bag.
Sizes: R, L and W
Many mats come in several sizes. The name then includes an abbreviation such as R (regular), L (large) or RW (regular wide). A wider or longer mat gives more room, but is slightly heavier and larger when packed. The dimensions are listed with each product. If you sleep on your side or move around a lot at night, a wider mat is often more comfortable.
Sleeping bags with the temperature in the name
The sleeping bags often have the temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius in the name, such as Questar 20F/-6C or Vesper 32F/0C. Each product also shows the comfort temperature, which lets you compare sleeping bags well against each other.
What should you look for when choosing?
Consider how you travel. For a trek you choose a light air mat such as the NeoAir XLite or a foam mat such as the Z Lite, which cannot puncture. For a holiday by car a thick self-inflating mat such as the BaseCamp, LuxuryMap or MondoKing is more comfortable. Also look at the R-value for the season and the size that suits your height and sleeping position.
Maintenance and storage
Preferably inflate an air mat with a pump sack instead of by mouth: moisture from your breath can stay behind in the mat. At home, store a self-inflating mat unrolled or with the valve open, so the foam keeps its springiness. A puncture in an air mat can usually be sealed well with a repair kit. Take the repair kit with you on every trip, so a small leak does not cost you a night's sleep.
How to compare Therm-a-Rest
Use the filters to choose by type, comfort temperature and colour, and sort by price or popularity. You always order from the shop itself. Other brands for sleeping mats and sleeping bags are Sea to Summit, Robens and Nordisk. All sleeping bags and mats together can be found under sleeping bags and mats.
Frequently asked questions
What does the R-value of a Therm-a-Rest mat mean?
The R-value shows how well the mat insulates against the cold ground. The higher the number, the warmer you lie.
What do R, L and RW mean?
Those are the sizes: R is regular, L is large and RW is regular wide, a wider version of the standard length. The dimensions are listed with the product.
What is the difference between the NeoAir XLite and XTherm?
Both are light air mats. The XLite is designed to be as light as possible, while the XTherm insulates better and is intended for cold nights.
Do I buy Therm-a-Rest through Boender Outdoor?
No. Boender Outdoor compares prices and does not sell anything itself. You order from the shop, with its own delivery and terms.
