Compare sleeping bags and mats: sleeping bag, mat and air bed
A good night's sleep makes a camping holiday. In this category you compare sleeping bags, sleeping mats and air beds, with the comfort temperature, the dimensions and the current price at the shop. All camping gear together can be found under camping.
Choosing a sleeping bag
The comfort temperature is the temperature at which you would normally sleep comfortably. With the filter you can choose from sleeping bags for summer (10 °C and warmer) to sleeping bags for cold nights (below 0 °C). A rectangular sleeping bag gives room, a mummy sleeping bag fits more closely and holds warmth better. Down is light and packs down small, while synthetic filling keeps insulating better when it gets damp.
Sleeping mat or air bed?
A self-inflating mat has foam inside an air chamber and largely inflates by itself. An air mat is light and packs away small, such as the NeoAir mats from Therm-a-Rest and the Ether Light from Sea to Summit. A foam mat is cheap and indestructible. An air bed is mostly comfortable on a summer campsite. The higher the R-value of a mat, the better it insulates against the cold ground.
Size and packed size
With a sleeping bag, look at the length: choose a size at least 15 to 20 cm longer than your own height. With a mat, the width counts too; a wide mat is more comfortable if you sleep on your side. For treks, the weight and packed size are just as important as comfort.
Brands
Here you will find brands including Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit, Nordisk, Outwell, Robens, Vango and Coleman. You can compare a tent under tents.
Frequently asked questions
What does the comfort temperature of a sleeping bag mean?
The comfort temperature is the outside temperature at which an average sleeper still feels comfortably warm. Choose a sleeping bag with a comfort temperature slightly below the lowest night-time temperature you expect.
What is the R-value of a sleeping mat?
The R-value shows how well a mat insulates against the cold ground. The higher the number, the warmer you lie. For summer a low R-value is enough; for cold nights you choose a higher one.
Down or synthetic filling?
Down is light, warm and packs down small, but insulates less when it gets wet. Synthetic filling is cheaper and keeps insulating better in damp conditions.
