Compare caravan awnings, canopies and tarps
With an awning, canopy or tarp, your caravan, campervan or tent becomes a place where you can sit outside, even in rain or bright sun. In this category you compare caravan awnings, canopies, tent extensions, drive-away awnings and tarps, with their specifications and the current price at the shop. All camping gear together is in camping.
Which type suits you?
- Caravan awning: an enclosed room against the caravan or motorhome. For a caravan, you choose the size by the awning size (A measurement) of your caravan.
- Canopy: an open shelter attached to the caravan, motorhome or tent, for shade and cover.
- Drive-away awning: a freestanding tent you set up against a campervan and leave in place when you drive off.
- Tent extension: an extra room you attach to an existing tent, for example for storage or as a kitchen.
- Tarp: a light sheet you pitch with poles and guy lines, above your seating area or your hammock.
What to look out for
Check the fixing (keder rail, suction cups or poles), the dimensions and the material. Polyester is light and dries quickly, polycotton breathes better and stays cooler in the sun. For a drive-away awning or canopy, check the connection height: it has to match the height of your van or motorhome. The filters let you choose by type, dimensions, material and colour.
Pitching and care
Always peg and guy out an awning or tarp properly, especially in wind. Let the fabric dry before packing it away to prevent mould. Pegs, guy lines and footprints are in tent accessories.

Frequently asked questions
What size awning do I need?
For a caravan, you work out the size with the awning size (A measurement): the length of the awning rail from the ground on one side, over the roof, to the ground on the other side. The product page shows which awning size or height the awning or canopy fits.
What is the difference between an awning and a canopy?
An awning has walls all round and forms an extra room against the caravan or motorhome. A canopy is an open shelter for shade and cover; for some canopies you can buy side walls separately.
What is a tarp used for?
A tarp is a light sheet you pitch above a seating area, kitchen or hammock, for shade and shelter from rain. You set it up with poles or between trees and tension it with guy lines and pegs.
