Tent accessories: pegs, footprints, pumps and more
A tent only stands properly with the right tent accessories. In this category you compare pegs and mallets, guy lines, footprints and tent carpets, pumps for inflatable tents, repair kits and electric tent heaters, with the current price at the shop. Tents themselves are in tents.
What will you find here?
- Pegs and mallets: steel, aluminium or plastic pegs for soft, hard or sandy ground, and a mallet to drive them in.
- Guy lines: lines and tensioners to pitch the tent taut.
- Footprint or tent carpet: a footprint under the tent protects the groundsheet from moisture and wear; a tent carpet makes the floor softer and warmer.
- Tent pump: a hand pump to inflate the air beams of an inflatable tent.
- Repair kit: to fix small tears in the fabric or the air beams.
What to look out for
Choose pegs that suit the ground: thin pegs for grass, sturdy or ribbed pegs for hard ground and wide pegs for sand. A footprint should be slightly smaller than the tent floor, otherwise rainwater runs underneath. For a pump, check that it reaches the pressure your tent needs. Keep pegs and guy lines in a separate bag so they do not damage the tent fabric.
Heating in the tent
Only an electric heater made for the purpose belongs in a tent, connected to the campsite power supply. Never use a gas heater or any other appliance with a naked flame in a tent. Keep a distance from the tent fabric and sleeping bags, and do not leave a heater on while you sleep or are away.
Brands
Here you can compare Bo-Camp, Brunner, Dometic, Outwell and Sea to Summit, among others.
Frequently asked questions
Which tent pegs do I need?
That depends on the ground. For grass, ordinary steel or aluminium pegs will do, for hard or stony ground choose sturdy pegs and a mallet, and for sand wide or long pegs. Always bring a few spares.
Why use a footprint under the tent?
A footprint protects the bottom of the tent from moisture, sharp stones and wear. Choose one slightly smaller than the tent floor, so rainwater does not run onto the footprint under the tent.
Which pump do I need for an inflatable tent?
An inflatable tent needs a pump that reaches enough pressure for the air beams. The tent states the pressure needed; check that the pump reaches it and that the valve fits.
