The kamado egg — also known as kamado egg or egg-style kamado — is the most recognisable and iconic shape of the ceramic kamado BBQ. With its distinctive rounded form and thick ceramic walls, the kamado egg is the definition of versatile outdoor cooking. At Boender Outdoor you'll find a curated collection of kamado egg BBQs from Keij Kamado. Also check out the full kamado BBQ range and matching kamado accessories.
Why the egg shape?
The rounded, egg-like shape of the kamado egg is not just aesthetic — it's also functional. The curved walls ensure optimal air circulation inside the kamado, allowing heat to be distributed evenly across the entire cooking surface. Benefits of the egg shape:
- Optimal air circulation — the curved walls guide hot air smoothly around the food for even cooking
- Maximum heat retention — the ceramic dome retains heat exceptionally well
- Versatile cooking surface — the round grate is ideal for both large pieces of meat and multiple small portions
- Iconic design — the egg shape is timeless and a real eye-catcher on any patio
What can you cook on a kamado egg?
A kamado egg is completely versatile. Thanks to its wide temperature range (50 to 350+ °C) and stable temperature control, you can cook on the same BBQ:
- Grilling — steak, chicken, fish and vegetables directly above the charcoal at high temperatures
- Smoking (low and slow) — pulled pork, brisket and ribs at 100–130 °C, stable for hours
- Pizza baking — authentic pizza in 60–90 seconds at 300–350 °C with a pizza stone
- Roasting — whole chickens or rolled joints on the rotisserie, slow and evenly cooked
- Baking — bread, desserts and casseroles in the kamado as an oven at 180–220 °C

Maintaining your kamado egg
A kamado egg is remarkably low-maintenance. Close all air vents after use to extinguish the charcoal. Remove ash residue via the ash drawer. Clean the grate with a grill brush. The ceramic requires little further maintenance — a periodic high heat burn-off (350+ °C) burns away all fat and food residues. Cover the kamado with a protective cover if it sits outside for extended periods.

Frequently asked questions
What is a kamado egg?
A kamado egg is a ceramic barbecue in the classic egg-shaped form. The rounded ceramic dome ensures optimal air circulation and maximum heat retention. On a kamado egg you can grill, smoke, bake and roast at temperatures from 50 to over 350 °C.
What's the difference between a kamado egg and a regular kamado?
"Kamado egg" refers to the classic, rounded egg-shaped ceramic kamado. In practice, virtually all ceramic kamados are built in this egg style. The term is sometimes used to distinguish it from more modern, cylindrical or rectangular ceramic cooking appliances. In our range, all Keij Kamados are classic egg-style kamados.
Which size kamado egg should I choose?
For 1–3 people or a small patio: the 15-inch Compact. For 4–6 people: the 21-inch Large (most popular). For large gatherings or serious BBQ enthusiasts: the 23-inch XL.
How long does it take to bring a kamado egg to temperature?
For direct grilling temperatures (150–250 °C): approximately 15–20 minutes. For pizza baking (300–350 °C): 30–40 minutes including warming up the pizza stone. For low-and-slow (100–130 °C): 30 minutes to reach a stable temperature.
Can a kamado egg stay outside?
Yes, the cordierite ceramic is fully weather-resistant. We recommend using a protective cover if the kamado is not used for extended periods, to protect the metal components (hinges, air vents) from corrosion.
Which accessories do I need for my kamado egg?
The most valuable first purchase is a plate setter (for indirect grilling) or the Divide & Conquer system (for multi-zone cooking). Want to bake pizzas? Add a ceramic pizza stone. For whole chickens, a rotisserie is essential. Check out all options in our accessory shop.
