Buying a Rope Lounge Set: What Should You Look For? Buyer's Guide 2026

Table of contents

A rope lounge set looks soft and luxurious, and that's exactly why so many people want one. But under the word "rope" on product pages, you'll find different types of cord, aluminium or wooden frames, and sets where only the armrests are rope. In this buying guide, you'll read what to look for specifically with rope: which cord is actually used, how much rope is on the set, which frame suits you, which colour is smart, and what to check on delivery. Using five rope lounge sets from the range as examples.

💡

In short: check the upholstery material to see which type of rope is on the set, and where it sits: on the back and arms, or only as a detail. Choose the frame based on maintenance: aluminium only needs a bit of soapy water, acacia wood also needs oil. Light rope colours show stains more quickly. Check the rope on delivery and do the choice test if you're unsure.

What makes a rope lounge set different?

Rope is synthetic outdoor cord that is woven or wrapped around a frame. On most rope lounge sets, it sits on the back and armrests, while you sit on cushions. That means two things when buying: the rope mainly determines the look and how the armrests feel, while the cushions and frame determine seating comfort and maintenance.

The general checks on a product page, such as what's included in the set, the dimensions, the table and the packaging, are covered in buying a lounge set: what should you look out for?. If you're still torn between rope and wicker, read rope or wicker lounge set first. This guide focuses on what is specific to rope.

Which type of rope is on it?

"Rope" is not a fixed material name. On the product page, the type of cord is usually listed under upholstery material or in the description. These are the types you'll come across in the current range:

On the product pageWhat it isExample
Qualicord ropeBrand name for outdoor cordTeramon
Solution dyed polyesterColour is already in the fibreMonti
Hand-woven ropePlastic that looks like cordAllasio
Hand-knotted cord workRope on a wooden frameTalara
TPU or TPU ropeSoft, smooth plasticSolita

The manufacturer describes Qualicord as strong, colourfast and weather-resistant. With solution dyed polyester, the colour is added before the cord is made; in the Monti, that hand-woven rope has a rubber core. TPU is a smoother plastic than textile-like rope. You can read how rope is made in what is rope material.

Read the upholstery, not just the category

The Solita lounge set is among the rope lounge sets, but under upholstery material it says TPU. If you really want to feel textile-like cord under your arms, check the specifications for the upholstery.

How much rope is actually on it?

In a photo, every rope lounge set looks "made of cord". The description tells you where the rope really sits, and this varies considerably:

  • Back and armrests: on the Teramon, the back and armrests are finished with Qualicord rope; on the Allasio, the back and sides are hand-woven rope. You see and feel a lot of cord.
  • Sides with open weave: the Corsano has rope on the sides in an open weave pattern. Lighter, with more view of the frame.
  • Armrests only: on the Santos, the armrests are finished with rope and the rest is acacia wood.

More rope gives more of that soft, textile-like look, but also more surface that you have to keep clean. If you mainly want the feel of cord under your arms, choose a set where the armrests are entirely rope.

The frame beneath the rope

The rope wraps around a frame, and that frame largely determines how much work the set will need. In the range, you'll see two types:

FrameMaintenanceSuits
Aluminium, powder-coatedMild soapy water, soft clothLow maintenance, modern
Acacia wood, white washAlso wood oil or teak oilNatural, warm garden

A powder-coated aluminium frame is lightweight and doesn't rust. For acacia wood, the manufacturer of the Talara says to treat the wood annually with teak oil or a wood care product, and that small cracks or colour changes are normal for acacia wood outdoors. For the Santos, it states that you should treat the wood regularly with wood oil. You can read how this works in practice in treating wooden garden furniture.

Also pay attention to the colour of the frame alongside the rope. On the Allasio, natural rope sits on a dark grey frame, which creates contrast. On the Monti, grey sand rope sits on a taupe frame, which looks calmer and softer.

Colour of rope and cushions

In the range, you'll see rope in taupe, natural, grey sand and dark grey, among others. Colour is mostly a matter of taste, but it also has practical consequences:

  • Light rope (taupe, natural, grey sand) looks soft and airy. Stains from sun cream, grease and dirt show up more easily.
  • Dark rope (dark grey) hides more dirt, but gets warmer against your arms in full sun.
  • Cushions on these sets are usually sand-coloured. Choose a rope colour that sits calmly alongside them, or deliberately create contrast.

Do you often rest your arms on the armrest in shorts or with sun cream on? Then the rope touches your skin the most. With light rope, a towel over the armrest on sunny days is the easiest protection against dark marks.

For which garden style suits rope, read rope or wicker: look and feel and the page on the modern garden.

Cushions for a rope lounge set

Because you sit on cushions and not on the rope, the cushions are just as important as the cord. Three points that matter more with rope:

  • Number of cushions: the rope sets in this article have between 4 (Talara) and 15 (Santos). All those cushions need to be stored dry when it rains and in winter, so factor in storage space.
  • Removable covers: on the Allasio, the covers are removable. This makes cleaning easier.
  • Wet cushions on rope: a soaked cushion keeps the rope underneath damp for a long time. Remove wet cushions so the rope and frame can dry out.

Compare cushion thickness and seat depth as you would for any lounge set; this is covered in how to choose a lounge set. You'll find storage tips in storing garden cushions.

Checking the rope on delivery in 5 steps

Rope is woven around the frame by hand or by machine. You can best see whether it has been done well right after unpacking. Take a quarter of an hour for this, before you put the cushions on.

1
Unpack on a clean surface

Lay down a rug or the cardboard so the rope doesn't rub against tiles or gravel. Don't use a knife right alongside the cord when opening the boxes.

2
Feel the tension

Press your hand on the back and armrests. The rope should be evenly taut everywhere, without slack sections or places where the cord shifts.

3
Look at the ends

Check the corners, the underside and the back. The ends of the cord should be neatly finished, without loose ends or frayed bits.

4
Compare the colour per part

Place the parts side by side in daylight. For a set with separate pieces, such as the Teramon or Monti, the rope must be the same colour on all parts.

5
Take photos and report it straight away

If something isn't right, take photos and contact the shop immediately. For the sets in this article, the product information states a 2-year guarantee.

Can a rope lounge set stay outside?

Outdoor rope absorbs little water and dries quickly, and a powder-coated aluminium frame doesn't rust. A rope lounge set can therefore withstand a shower. However, the set will stay looking good for longer if you store it dry in winter or cover it with a breathable cover, and place it where it can dry after a shower. Under trees, you'll get green deposits and bird droppings on the rope more quickly.

Dry first, then cover

A cover over wet rope traps moisture. Let the set dry out after rain first, and choose a breathable protective cover that is large enough for the outer dimensions of your set. Measure your set yourself and compare that with the dimensions of the cover.

Checklist before you order

Tick off what you have checked; your browser will remember it.

  • Read the upholstery material: rope, Qualicord, solution dyed or TPU
  • Looked at where the rope sits: back and arms, or only details
  • Chosen a frame: aluminium with soapy water, or acacia wood with oil
  • Chosen a rope colour that suits sun, stains and the cushions
  • Checked the specifications to see whether a table is included
  • Read the maintenance tips and guarantee on the product page

Common mistakes

Relying only on the "rope" category

Not every set in the rope category has textile-like rope. Sometimes the upholstery is TPU, a smoother plastic. Read the specifications if the feel of cord matters to you.

Rubbing oil onto the rope

With a rope set that has acacia wood, the wood should get the oil, not the cord. Mask off the rope or work with a small brush, so no stains end up in the cord.

Choosing light rope without thinking about sun cream

Sun cream and grease soak into the cord and leave dark marks, and you'll notice them first on light rope. Put a towel over the armrest or choose a darker colour.

Only looking at the rope months later

Loose ends or slack sections that were there from the start are easiest to report right after delivery. Check the rope before you put the cushions on.

Covering a wet rope set

Under a cover, wet cord doesn't dry out. This leads to black spots and a musty smell. Let the set dry first and choose a breathable cover.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of rope is best for a lounge set?

Choose outdoor rope that is colourfast and absorbs little water. On product pages you may see Qualicord rope, which the manufacturer describes as strong and colourfast, or solution dyed polyester, where the colour is already in the fibre. TPU rope is a supple, smoother plastic. Check the "material of the weave" to see which type it is.

Is a rope lounge set with an aluminium or a wooden frame better?

That depends on how much maintenance you want. A powder-coated aluminium frame only needs a mild soapy water wash and does not rust. A frame made from acacia wood looks warmer and more natural, but according to the manufacturer you should treat it regularly or once a year with wood oil or teak oil. In that case, make sure you don't apply any oil to the rope itself.

What should you check on the rope when the set is delivered?

Check that the rope is tight and even all the way around the frame, that the ends are neatly finished, and that the colour is the same on all parts. If you see loose ends, slack sections or damage, take photos and report it to the shop straight away. For the sets in this article, the product information states a 2-year guarantee.

Can a rope lounge set stay outside all year round?

Rope and a powder-coated aluminium frame are designed for outdoor use, but the set will stay looking good for longer if you store it dry over winter or cover it with a breathable protective cover. Always store the cushions dry during rain and in winter, as the polyester covers are water-repellent but not waterproof.

Which colour of rope is the best choice?

Light colours such as taupe, natural and grey sand look soft and airy, but sunscreen and dirt marks show up more easily on them. Dark colours such as dark grey hide more, but they become warmer in full sun. Also choose a cushion colour that matches the rope and the frame, so the set forms one cohesive whole.
