A garden set is the heart of your terrace or garden, the place where you gather with family and friends. But how do you determine how much space you need for your ideal garden set? That depends on the size and shape of the table, the number of chairs and the desired movement space. Here we explain it clearly!
1. The size of the garden set
The dimensions of the garden table and chairs determine how much space the set takes up. There are two important factors here: the width and length of the table and the seating space per person.
Garden table dimensions
In our range, tables vary from 120 cm to 280 cm. Each person needs approximately 70 cm of seating space to sit comfortably. For a four-person garden set, a table of at least 140 cm wide is suitable. Would you like a bit more space or a more spacious look? Then choose an extra margin of 20-60 cm.
Space for chairs
The chairs make the garden set slightly longer than just the table. On average, an additional 30 cm is added to both ends due to the space the chairs take up.
- Example: A table 90 cm long quickly becomes 150 cm long including chairs.
2. Movement space around the set
To use the garden set comfortably, you need space to push chairs back and move around the table easily.
Minimum movement space
- To be able to push chairs back, you need approximately 70 cm behind the chair.
- Would you also like to walk easily around the set? Then allow for an extra margin of 60-80 cm around the table.
Example calculation:
With a table 140 cm wide with 4 chairs, the total required space is a minimum of:
- Width: 140 cm (table) + 70 cm (space left) + 70 cm (space right) = 280 cm
- Length: 90 cm (table) + 70 cm (chair space front) + 70 cm (chair space back) = 230 cm
3. How large should a terrace be for a garden set?
The dimensions of your terrace depend on the size of your garden set. Here are a few guidelines:
Garden set for 4 people
A rectangular table 160 cm wide with 4 chairs fits on a terrace of a minimum of 260 cm x 220 cm. This takes into account 70 cm of chair space around it.
Garden set for 6 people
A rectangular table 200 cm wide with 6 chairs fits on a terrace of a minimum of 300 cm x 240 cm. This takes into account 70 cm of chair space around it.
Garden set for 8 people
For a table 240 cm wide with 8 chairs, you need a terrace of at least 340 cm x 280 cm.
Practical tips for an optimal terrace
- Measure your space: Before purchasing a garden set, measure your terrace or garden carefully.
- Allow for obstacles: Think of plant pots, walls or other garden furniture that take up space.
- Choose the right shape: Do you have a smaller terrace? A round or oval table often saves space.
With these tips and dimensions, you know exactly how much space you need for a comfortable and practical garden set. At Boender Outdoor Garden Furniture you will find an extensive range of garden sets for every type of garden or terrace. Feel free to take a look!
