A garden set for 6 people is the right size for a family that likes to have people round for dinner, or for friends who sit down together more often as six than as four. In short: as a guideline, allow 60 to 70 cm of table edge per person. For six people that's roughly 160 to 180 cm long if someone sits at each end, 200 to 220 cm with three people along each long side, or around Ø140 to 150 cm if round. Three routes to a dining set for six
For six people you have more choice than for eight: there are complete sets with a table and six chairs, but you can also combine a table and chairs separately. And where a round table for eight quickly becomes too big, a round one for six works really well.

What table size do you need for 6 people?
As a guideline, allow 60 to 70 cm of table edge per person. At 60 cm you'll sit fairly close together, at 70 cm you'll have plenty of room. For six people, the size depends mainly on whether someone sits at each end:

This is how those sizes add up: two chairs along a long side need 120 to 140 cm of table edge, three chairs need 180 to 210 cm. For a round table, work out the circumference: Ø150 cm gives just over 4.7 metres of edge, so nearly 80 cm per person. Ø120 cm gives about 63 cm per person, which is more of a table for four to five. Place six chairs you already own around a sheet of cardboard or a tablecloth in the size of the new table. Then sit down with all six of you and walk around. You'll notice straight away whether your elbows bump into each other, and whether there's really room at the ends.
Rectangular, oval or round?
The shape determines how your group sits at the table and how the table fits on your patio. For six people, all three shapes are a good choice.

If you have a narrow, elongated patio, choose a rectangular table: the narrower the top, the more room there is to walk down the sides. Choosing chairs for six
If you buy a complete set, the table and chairs are already matched. If you put one together yourself, pay attention to these points:
- Width: add up the width of the chairs along one long side. Three Costa chairs, each 50 cm wide, take up 1.5 metres together. With an oval table, only the straight part of the long side counts.
- Armrests: a chair with armrests only slides under the top if the armrest is lower than the space under the table. The Costa armrest is 63 cm high; the Edison oval 220 has, according to the description, 69 cm of legroom under the top.
- Cushions: with some sets they're included, with others they're not. Check "Cushions included" in the product information.
- Quantity: many dining chairs are sold in packs of four. For six, you'd buy two packs and have two left over. There are also sets of six, such as the Costa.

Two chairs spare? Keep them as a reserve
If you buy two packs of four, seat six at the table and store two in the shed or garage. If you have extra guests one day, they can sit at the ends. This only works if the table is wide enough there, so at least 90 cm.
How much space do you need?
A chair needs room to move back so someone can stand up. So keep at least 70 cm clear from the table edge, and preferably 90 cm if someone needs to get past a seated chair:
- Minimum: (table length + 140 cm) x (table width + 140 cm)
- Generous: (table length + 180 cm) x (table width + 180 cm)
- Round table: diameter + 140 cm, in both directions

The Edison is an oval garden table of 220 x 115 cm with a light brown Vironwood top and an aluminium frame with a taupe powder coating. It is 75 cm high, has, according to the description, 69 cm of legroom under the top and weighs 33.9 kg. According to the product information, Vironwood needs no oil or varnish. With the guideline of 60 to 70 cm per person, three people sit along each long side, or two along each side and one at each end.

How to choose in 4 steps
Will someone sit at each end (2 + 2) or only along the long sides (3 + 3)? Or would you rather go round? That determines the length of the table.
Measure up to the first obstacle and allow 70 cm on each side for the chairs. What's left is the largest table that will fit.
Narrow and elongated: rectangular. Long but with a walkway along the table: oval. Almost square: round, Ø140 to 150 cm.
A complete set is the simplest. If you choose your own, add up the chair widths and compare the armrest height with the space under the top.
Common mistakes
Squeezing six around a table for four
A 160 cm table with an extra chair at each end seems enough, but the ends need to be at least 90 cm wide. If the top is narrower, the person at the end sits cramped and has their plate half over the corner.
Armrests that don't fit under the top
Chairs with armrests will otherwise stand a fair distance from the table. Compare the height of the armrest with the height under the top.
Only measuring the table
A 220 cm table may look like it fits on paper, but with chairs and sliding room you need at least 3.6 metres. Always allow 70 cm, or preferably 90 cm, all the way round.
Assuming cushions are included
The Cosmo/Felini and Osaka/Felini sets come without cushions, according to the specifications. Factor them into your budget if you want them.
Shade and covers
