A dining lounge set promises the best of both worlds: lounging on a sofa with cushions and eating at a proper table. Whether it actually feels that way depends almost entirely on a few centimetres. Sit too low and your chin ends up above your plate. Have the top too low and your knees won't fit underneath. What makes a dining lounge set different?
A dining lounge set is a lounge sofa, often L-shaped, with a table you can eat at. Two things make it different from a regular lounge set or garden set:
- The sofa is more upright than a proper lounge sofa, with a shallower seat and firmer cushions, so you can sit upright at the table.
- The table is lower than a regular dining table. Garden Impressions calls the Monti a "medium high" table: 68 cm high, where a dining table such as the Edison oval is 75 cm.
The sofa and table therefore belong together. A dining lounge set only works if the dimensions are matched, and that's what this guide is about. The three dimensions that must match
With a garden set with chairs, you can still move the chair or grab a cushion. With a lounge sofa, you're stuck with the seat height of the sofa. That's why these three dimensions need to fit together:
- Seat height: from the ground to the top of the seat. For the Sergio and the Santos, it states explicitly that it's measured including cushions; for other sets, it doesn't say.
- Table height: from the ground to the top of the tabletop. This is the height at which your plate sits.
- Underside of the top: from the ground to the underside of the top or the edge beneath it. This determines how much room your thighs have.
The difference between seat height and table height tells you how high the top is in front of you. For the Monti that's 68 minus 42 is 26 cm. With a regular 75 cm dining table and a chair of around 45 cm, the difference is roughly 30 cm. A lounge-dining set therefore sits slightly lower relative to your plate, which suits the somewhat more relaxed, reclined posture on a sofa.
The difference between the underside of the top and the seat height is the space for your thighs. For the Monti that's 64 minus 42 is 22 cm. How much you need depends on your height and on how far the cushions compress, so if possible, sit at a table of similar height first.
Put a kitchen chair with a cushion on it at sofa height, and a box or small table at tabletop height. Two minutes of sitting tells you more than a product photo.

One figure, two names
For the Allasio, Elati and Sardinia, the product description gives a table height of 63, 64 and 66 cm, while exactly the same figure appears in the specifications as the height of the underside of the tabletop. That's a difference of the thickness of the top and the edge beneath it. Ask the shop which measurement it is before you order. Legroom: underside of the top and table legs
With a sofa, you don't slide in like you do on a chair: you shuffle sideways into your place, with your legs under the top. That's why two dimensions count that you're less likely to check with a garden set.
- Space under the top: the underside of the top minus the seat height. For the Barcelona that's 64 minus 44.5 is 19.5 cm, for the Corsica 63 minus 42.5 is 20.5 cm, and for the Monti 22 cm.
- Distance between the table legs: how much room there is for legs between the legs of the table. The Allasio has 149 cm, the Barcelona 146 cm, the Sardinia 134 cm, the Corsica 117 cm, the Elati 114.5 cm and the Monti 105 cm.
If three people sit along the long side of the sofa, you don't want anyone with a table leg between their knees. Compare the distance between the legs with the length of the sofa section where the table sits.
Seat depth: how far are you from your plate?
A deep seat is lovely for lounging, but at the table it means your back sits further from the top. If you sit with your back against the cushions, you end up eating hunched forward. The seat depths of the sets in this article:
- Around 50 cm: Barcelona 49 cm, Sardinia and Allasio 51 cm, Elati 53 cm. You sit closer to the top, which is pleasant if you often eat at length.

Most dining lounge sets have a corner sofa. A few things work differently there compared with a straight table:
- The corner spot: there you sit at an angle to the table, and your knees quickly hit the table leg or the other section of the sofa. Use that spot mainly for lounging, and run the long side of the top along the long side of the sofa.
- The open side: on the side without a sofa you can place chairs or stools. Then choose chairs with a seat height that matches the sofa, otherwise one half of the table sits higher than the other.
- Stools: loose seats without a backrest. The Santos comes with two, which according to the product information serve as extra seating or as a footstool. The Corsica comes with a sports bench.

A loose lounge-dining table with your own sofa
Do you already have a lounge sofa and just want a table to eat at? That's possible, as long as you compare the dimensions carefully.
Measure from the ground to the top of the seat cushion, with the cushions on it. Press down on it: how far does the cushion sink when you sit?
Work out how much higher the top sits above your seat. For the Monti, Sergio and Santos that's 26 cm (68 minus 42); put your own result alongside it.
The underside should stay well clear of your thighs when you sit. Measure from the seat to the top of your thigh and add some allowance.
Compare the length of the top with the length of the sofa section where the table will sit. The top doesn't need to be longer than the seats you use at the table.

Putting a regular dining table next to a lounge sofa
At a dining table of around 75 cm, you sit far too low on a low lounge sofa. Choose a lounge-dining table that is matched to that seat height.
Forgetting the table legs
If the legs stand in front of a seat, the person sitting there will have their knees against the frame. Look at the distance between the legs and where they stand in relation to the sofa.
Buying a deep lounge sofa to eat at
The deeper the seat, the further you sit from your plate. If you often eat outside, choose a seat depth of around 50 cm or solve it with an extra back cushion.
Leaving cushions outside
