What is the minimum height a garden bench should be?

A garden bench is not only a pleasant addition to your garden, but should also be comfortable to sit on. And comfort begins with the correct seat height. But how high should a garden bench actually be at minimum? We'd be happy to explain!

The ideal seat height

Generally speaking, the ideal seat height of a garden bench is between 40 and 45 centimetres. This is measured from the ground to the top of the seating surface. This is roughly the same height as a standard dining chair, allowing you to sit comfortably without your knees ending up too high or too low.

Why is the correct height important?

  • Seating comfort: A bench that is too low makes it difficult to get up. A bench that is too high, on the other hand, can mean that your feet don't rest properly on the ground.
  • Ergonomics: Especially if you sit on the bench for a longer period (for example with a good book or during a barbecue), you want your back and legs to be well supported.
  • Style and appearance: The correct height also creates a pleasing proportion with your garden table or the rest of your garden set.

What if you use cushions?

Do you use seat cushions on your garden bench? Then you need to account for the thickness of the cushion. For example, a 5 cm thick cushion means that the hard seating of the bench itself can be slightly lower, so that you still end up at that 40 to 45 cm when you sit down.
