Sustainable garden furniture: everyone wants it, but what does it actually mean? For one person, a sustainable piece is a chair that still stands firm after ten summers. For another, it's a table made from wood from responsibly managed forests, or a frame you can recycle later. Both are right. In this guide we look at both sides: which materials last, what to watch for environmentally, how to check an eco claim, and why loose cushions and covers matter more than you might think. With examples from our range.
In short: the most sustainable garden furniture is the piece you use for a long time. An aluminium frame lasts a long time with little maintenance and is easy to recycle. If you choose wood, go for FSC-certified wood and check that the certification really appears in the product information. And look out for loose cushions and removable covers: then you only need to replace what has worn out.
Sustainable: lasting long and better for the environment
When shops and manufacturers use the word sustainable, they usually mean one of two things. It helps to keep them apart:
- Sustainable as in long-lasting: the furniture can withstand the weather, wears down slowly and remains usable for years. If you can replace parts such as cushions or covers separately, it will last even longer.
- Sustainable as in environmentally friendly: the material comes from a responsible source, such as FSC wood, is made from recycled raw materials or can be reused at the end of its life, as with aluminium.
The two are connected. A table that lasts twenty years doesn't need to be made, packaged and transported three times over. That is why lifespan is just as important in this guide as the origin of the material. You can read in detail how long garden furniture lasts and which parts wear first in how long does a lounge set last and how long do garden chairs last.
Materials compared
This table sets out for each material how long it lasts and what to watch for environmentally. These are general material characteristics; the quality varies per product. You can read how each material responds to sun, rain and frost in which garden furniture is weather-resistant.
| Material | Lasts long if | Environmental point of attention |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | The powder coating stays intact | Easy to recycle |
| Acacia wood | You oil it on time | Choose FSC wood |
| Teak | It can dry after rain | Check origin and FSC |
| Vironwood, teak look | You keep it clean | Plastic, not wood |
| Wicker, rope | It isn't kinked or dragged | Plastic, hard to separate |
| Steel | You touch up paint damage | Rusts when damaged |
| Natural rattan | It stays dry and indoors | Natural, but vulnerable |
| Cushions | You store them dry | Preferably replaceable separately |
What stands out: no single material wins on every point. Aluminium scores on lifespan and recycling, FSC wood on origin, and plastics such as Vironwood and wicker mainly on low maintenance. A frame where different materials are firmly bonded together, such as woven wicker around a frame, is harder to take apart at the end of its life than a piece made from a single material.
How to recognise sustainable garden furniture
- A frame that can withstand the weather, such as aluminium with powder coating or well-maintained hardwood
- For wood: FSC is stated literally in the product information
- Loose cushions, preferably with a removable cover
- A top or weave that doesn't need annual treatment, or a treatment you will actually carry out
- Warranty and clear care instructions from the manufacturer
Wood: choose FSC and check it
Wood is a natural material that regrows, but only if the forest is managed well. That is what the FSC certification is for: according to the manufacturer, wood carrying FSC comes from responsibly managed forests. Not every wooden garden furniture piece has that certification. If FSC isn't in the product information, don't assume it.
Among the wooden lounge sets in this comparison, the certification is stated literally for the Santos and the Talara, both made from acacia wood with a white wash finish. Acacia is a sturdy hardwood, but it does need maintenance: the product information for both sets recommends treating the wood regularly or annually with wood oil. If you don't, the wood turns grey and can dry out. According to the manufacturer, small cracks are normal in acacia used outdoors. You can read how to deal with this in treating wooden garden furniture.

Aluminium and Vironwood: long-lasting with little maintenance
Aluminium doesn't rust and, with powder coating, keeps a fixed colour. A frame therefore needs little more than the occasional wipe with soapy water. That makes it one of the materials that lasts longest without much effort on your part. In addition, aluminium can be recycled well at the end of its life. The downside: making new aluminium uses a lot of energy. The longer you use the frame, the better that investment pays off. You can read more about the metal itself in what is aluminium and can an aluminium garden set rust.
If you want the warm look of wood without oil, Vironwood is the answer. According to the product information, it is a low-maintenance plastic with the appearance of teak that needs no oil or varnish. So it isn't wood, and there is no forestry certification for it; the advantage lies in its long lifespan with little upkeep. You can find everything about the material in what is Vironwood.

Replaceable cushions and covers
With almost every lounge set or garden chair, the cushions wear out sooner than the frame. The foam becomes softer and the fabric can fade in the sun. Whether a set is sustainable therefore also depends on one question: can you replace the cushions separately or wash the covers? Then you don't have to throw away an entire piece of furniture because of one worn cushion.
The most sustainable garden furniture is the furniture you don't have to replace. So when buying, don't just look at the frame, but also at what will be available later as a separate item: cushions, covers and loose elements.
A few things to look out for:
- Loose cushions: cushions that simply rest on the frame can later be replaced with new ones in the same size.
- Removable covers: a cover with a zip can be washed, so the cushion stays looking good for longer.
- Loose elements: with a modular lounge set you can rearrange the layout when you move or change the way your patio is arranged, instead of buying a new set.
If your cushions do need replacing, there are also cushions made from recycled fabric. According to the product information, the Madison Eco-line cushions have a fabric of 75% cotton, 20% polyester and 5% other fibres, with the statement 100% recycling.

Please note: measure your current cushions carefully before ordering; a different size won't automatically fit every sofa. You can read how to do this in replacing the cushions of your lounge set.

Sustainable choices mean something different to everyone. Answer four questions and see which route suits you best.
What does sustainable mean to you when it comes to garden furniture?
What do you want to see on your patio in ten summers' time?
- Real wood with grain and character
- A sleek frame that still looks just as good
- My current set, but fresh again
How is your current outdoor set holding up?
- Worn out, or I don't have anything yet and want wood
- Worn out, and I want something that lasts without fuss
- The frame is still sturdy, only the cushions are finished
What do you do with your garden furniture on a sunny Saturday in April?
- I spend the afternoon sanding and oiling; I enjoy that
- Wipe everything down with soapy water and that's that
- Wash the covers and lay the cushions back out
Which statement would you like to see in the product information?
- FSC for the wood
- Aluminium frame and a top without oil
- Recycled fabric or a removable cover
FSC wood. You want real wood and are prepared to put in the maintenance. Choose wood where FSC is stated literally in the product information, and oil it on time.
Aluminium with Vironwood. You want furniture that lasts with as little maintenance as possible, and a frame that can be recycled later.
Refresh rather than replace. Your frame is still in good condition. New cushions or washed covers will give your set a second life, and that is the most sustainable choice of all.

Checking eco claims
Words like sustainable, eco and environmentally friendly appear in many product descriptions. They only mean something when there is a concrete fact behind them. Go through these points before you order:
- Is a certification such as FSC stated literally next to the wood?
- Is it clear which part is recycled, for example the fabric of the cushion cover?
- Are the cushions loose, and is the cover removable and washable?
- Is it stated what maintenance the material needs, and will you actually carry it out?
- How many years of warranty does the manufacturer give?
- Can the furniture stay outside, or do you need storage space or a protective cover?
Store cushions dry
Water-repellent is not waterproof. Cushions that stay wet will wear out faster. Storing them dry is the cheapest way to make them last longer; read storing garden cushions.
A cover for the winter
A breathable cover keeps leaves, bird droppings and moisture off the frame. You can read what to do with each material in winter in what to do with garden furniture in winter.
Common mistakes
Trusting the word sustainable
A product name with eco or sustainable says little. Look for the concrete fact behind it: a certification, recycled fabric or a replaceable part.
Buying wood without putting in the time
FSC wood is a good choice, but without oil it dries out and doesn't last as long. If you don't want maintenance, aluminium with Vironwood will suit you better.
Buying something cheap every season
A set that is worn out after two summers puts more strain on the environment than a set that lasts ten summers. Pay attention to the frame, the warranty and replaceable parts.
Replacing the whole set for the sake of the cushions
If the frame is still sturdy, new cushions or washed covers are often enough. That saves money and waste.
Frequently asked questions
Which garden furniture is the most sustainable?
The most sustainable furniture is a piece you use for a long time and whose worn parts you can replace separately. In practice, an aluminium frame with a low-maintenance top or woven fabric, and FSC-certified wood, score best. Aluminium lasts a long time with little maintenance and is easy to recycle; FSC wood comes from responsibly managed forests, but it does need oiling.
What does FSC mean for garden furniture?
FSC is a certification label for wood. If it appears on a piece of garden furniture, the wood comes from responsibly managed forests according to the manufacturer. Don't assume every wooden piece is made from FSC wood: check whether the certification is explicitly stated in the product information. For the Santos and Talara acacia wood sets, it is.
Is aluminium a sustainable material for garden furniture?
Yes, in two ways. Aluminium doesn't rust, so a powder-coated frame lasts many seasons with nothing more than a wash as maintenance. And at the end of its life, aluminium can be recycled well. Producing new aluminium does require a lot of energy, so the real gain lies in using the frame for as long as possible.
Is Vironwood sustainable?
According to the product information, Vironwood is a low-maintenance plastic with the look of teak. It doesn't need to be oiled or varnished, so it lasts a long time with little upkeep. It is not wood, and there is no certification for its origin. Its sustainability therefore lies mainly in its long lifespan.
How can you make your existing garden furniture more sustainable?
Use it for longer. Replace worn cushions instead of the whole set, wash removable covers, store cushions dry, and put a breathable cover over the frame in winter. Give wooden furniture oil on time. That way, something new is only needed once the frame itself is worn out.
