Which parasol base do you need?

A parasol is an essential item in the garden. Whether you have a cosy seating area or a spacious terrace, a parasol provides the necessary shade and comfort. However, without the right parasol base, there is a good chance that your parasol will blow over in a bit of wind. How do you choose the right parasol base? This depends on the type of parasol, the size of the canopy and whether you want a fixed or mobile base. In this blog we help you make the right choice.

Which parasol base do you need?

The right parasol base depends on the type of parasol you have. There are two common types:

Pole parasol

A pole parasol has a base with a tube into which the parasol pole is placed. Two factors are important here:

  • The tube diameter
The parasol pole must fit well in the tube. Some parasol bases have an adjustable tube diameter, which is handy if you are unsure which size you need.
  • The weight
A base that is too light will cause the parasol to become unstable and blow over easily. The larger the parasol, the heavier the base must be.

Cantilever parasol

A cantilever parasol has a flat base on which the parasol is mounted. You should pay attention to:

  • The centre distance
This is the distance between the screw holes of the parasol and the base. The base must fit exactly onto these.
  • The weight
Because a cantilever parasol catches more wind than a pole parasol, a heavier base is essential. Some models can also be sunk into the ground for extra stability.

How heavy should a parasol base be?

The weight of the parasol base determines how stable the parasol remains. The table below shows which weight is needed for different parasol sizes.

Parasol typeCanopy dimensionsParasol base weight
Pole parasolUp to 2 metres20-40 kg
2 to 3.5 metres40 kg
3.5 to 4 metres60 kg

Additional options to consider

  • Do you want to be able to move the parasol?
Then choose a parasol base with wheels. This way you can easily move the parasol with the sun. The wheels can be locked, so the parasol remains firmly in place.
  • Would you like a ground-mounted parasol base?
For a cantilever parasol, a ground-mounted base can be an attractive and stable solution. Pay close attention to the centre distances so that the parasol can be mounted firmly.
  • How important is the appearance?
A parasol base must not only be functional, but also match the style of the garden. Choose, for example, a sleek granite base or a sturdy concrete look.
