Centre pole parasol — the classic choice for every terrace

The centre pole parasol is the most traditional and popular parasol design. With a sturdy central pole and a generous canopy, a centre pole parasol offers reliable sun protection on any terrace, balcony or in any garden. At Boender Outdoor you'll find a wide range of centre pole parasols in various sizes, colours and materials — from compact balcony models to large garden parasols. Browse our complete parasols range and discover the perfect centre pole parasol for your outdoor space.

What is a centre pole parasol?

A centre pole parasol has a straight, central mast that runs through the middle of the canopy. This is the classic parasol design that everyone knows. The mast stands in a parasol base or is inserted through a hole in the garden table. Thanks to the central construction, a centre pole parasol is stable, lightweight and easy to open and fold away. Centre pole parasols are available in round and rectangular designs.

Benefits of a centre pole parasol

  • Easy to use — open and close with a hand crank or pulley system
  • Affordable purchase — more competitively priced than a cantilever parasol
  • Lightweight — easy to move to the desired position
  • Tilt function — many models have a tilting canopy for sun-tracking shade
  • Compact storage — closes fully and takes up little space
  • Wide range — available in all popular colours and sizes

Centre pole parasol versus cantilever parasol

Unsure between a centre pole parasol and a cantilever parasol? Both have their advantages. A centre pole parasol is cheaper, lighter and simpler to use. A cantilever parasol offers more flexibility as the mast is positioned to the side, giving you full shade over a table or lounge set without obstruction. For use with a garden set that has a parasol hole, the centre pole parasol is the logical choice. For above a lounge set or a terrace without a table hole, a cantilever parasol often works better.

Centre pole parasol by colour

At Boender Outdoor you'll find centre pole parasols in all popular colours:

  • Anthracite — the most popular choice, timeless and smart
  • Black — bold and modern
  • Beige — warm and natural
  • White — fresh and light
  • Grey — calm and neutral

Material and design

The mast of a centre pole parasol is typically made of aluminium or hardwood. Aluminium is lightweight, rust-resistant and low-maintenance. Wooden masts — often teak or eucalyptus — give a warm, classic look. The canopy is usually polyester or olefin and offers UV protection of UPF 30+. The best canopies, such as Sunbrella and Olefin, offer UPF 50+ protection and are particularly colour-fast. Looking for a fixed alternative? Then also check out our canopies.

Centre pole parasol in popular sizes

Choose the right size centre pole parasol for your situation:

  • Ø 200–250 cm — ideal for a balcony or 2-person table
  • Ø 270–300 cm — most popular size, suitable for a table up to 150 cm
  • Ø 350–400 cm — for large terraces and outdoor kitchens

Tip: choose a parasol that is at least 80 cm wider than your table for adequate shade on all sides.

The right parasol base

A good parasol base is essential for the stability of your centre pole parasol. Allow for 10 to 15 kg base weight per metre of parasol diameter. A centre pole parasol of Ø 300 cm therefore needs a base of at least 30 kg. Choose an in-ground parasol base if you want to keep the parasol permanently in one place, or a wheeled base for maximum flexibility.

Maintenance and protection

Always close your centre pole parasol in strong winds. Clean the canopy regularly with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Protect the parasol outside the season with a suitable parasol cover. Aluminium frames are maintenance-free; wooden masts can be treated annually with teak oil for a beautiful finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a centre pole parasol and a cantilever parasol?

A centre pole parasol has a central mast; a cantilever parasol has the mast on the side. A centre pole parasol is lighter, cheaper and simpler to use. A cantilever parasol offers more flexibility and a clear view under the canopy, but is heavier and more expensive.

What size centre pole parasol do I need?

Choose a centre pole parasol that is at least 80 cm wider than your table. For a table of 90×90 cm, Ø 200 cm is sufficient. For a table of 150 cm, choose Ø 270–300 cm. Large terraces require Ø 350–400 cm.

How heavy should the parasol base be for a centre pole parasol?

Allow for 10 to 15 kg per metre of parasol diameter. A parasol of Ø 300 cm needs a base of at least 30–45 kg. Always use the heaviest option in windy conditions.

Is a centre pole parasol suitable for windy conditions?

In light breeze (wind force 3–4), you can keep most centre pole parasols open. In stronger winds (wind force 5+), we recommend always closing the parasol. Models with wind ventilation valve are more stable in wind.

Can a centre pole parasol fit through a table hole?

Yes, most centre pole parasols fit through a standard table hole. Always check the mast diameter (usually 38 or 48 mm) and the table hole. This gives you shade directly above the table.

What material is best for a centre pole parasol?

Aluminium masts are the most popular: lightweight, rust-resistant and low-maintenance. Wooden masts (teak, eucalyptus) offer a warmer look but require more care. Choose an olefin or Sunbrella canopy for the best UV protection and colour-fastness.

How do I maintain a centre pole parasol?

Close the parasol in windy and rainy weather. Clean the canopy with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Use a parasol cover outside the season. Aluminium frames require no additional maintenance.

How much does a centre pole parasol cost?

At Boender Outdoor, centre pole parasols start from around €99 for compact models. Mid-range centre pole parasols with tilt function cost between €150 and €350. Premium models with Sunbrella canopy range from €400–€700.
