Cantilever Parasol — maximum shade, maximum freedom
A cantilever parasol (also known as a hanging parasol or freestanding parasol) offers the ultimate shade comfort for your terrace. Because the pole is positioned to the side rather than in the centre, you enjoy complete shade without obstruction. At Boender Outdoor you'll find an extensive range of cantilever parasols in all sizes, colours and price ranges — from compact 250×250 cm models to impressive 400×400 cm specimens. View our complete parasols range.
What is a cantilever parasol?
A cantilever parasol has the support pole positioned to the side rather than in the centre. The shade canopy therefore "floats" freely above your seating area. This design offers many advantages: you can rotate the canopy, tilt it and adjust the height, so you always have shade precisely where you need it. Cantilever parasols are the ideal choice above a lounge set, garden set or sun lounger where a central pole would be in the way.
Benefits of a cantilever parasol
- Unobstructed views and movement — no central pole in the way
- 360° rotatable — follow the sun throughout the day
- Tiltable — angle the canopy for shade when the sun is low
- Large shade area — available up to 400×400 cm
- Stable and robust — sturdy frame with heavy base
- Luxury appearance — gives your terrace a resort-like atmosphere
Cantilever parasol versus centre pole parasol
The main difference from a centre pole parasol is the position of the pole. A centre pole parasol is cheaper and lighter, but the middle pole can obstruct a dining table or seating area. A cantilever parasol offers more luxury and flexibility, but is heavier and requires a sturdier base. Choose a centre pole parasol for a simple, affordable solution and a cantilever parasol for maximum comfort and appearance.
Cantilever parasol by size
Choose the right size cantilever parasol for your situation:
- 250×250 cm — compact, suitable for a 2-person seating area
- 270×270 cm — popular size for an average terrace
- 300×300 cm — the bestseller, provides sufficient shade for 4–6 people
- 300×400 cm — for rectangular terraces and longer tables
- 350×350 cm — spacious shade area for large terraces
- 400×400 cm — maximum shade, ideal for commercial use and large gardens
- Ø 300–400 cm — round models for a classic look
Cantilever parasol by colour
Our cantilever parasols are available in the most popular outdoor colours:
- Anthracite — the #1 colour choice: modern and versatile
- Black — striking and sleek
- Beige — warm and inviting
- White — fresh and spacious
- Grey — neutral and calming
Base and installation
A cantilever parasol is heavier than a centre pole parasol and requires a sturdy parasol base or anchoring. The most popular options:
- Cross base — the standard base with tiles or concrete weights, suitable for tiled floors
- Ground-mounted base — permanently anchored in the ground, maximum stability
- Wheeled base — mobile yet stable, with integrated wheels
Plan for a minimum base weight of 90–120 kg for a 300×300 cm or larger cantilever parasol.
Maintenance and protection
Collapse your cantilever parasol in winds of force 5 or higher. Clean the canopy seasonally with lukewarm water and mild soap. Protect the frame and canopy out of season with a sturdy parasol cover. Aluminium frames are maintenance-free; check hinges and the opening mechanism annually.

Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of a cantilever parasol over a regular parasol?
The pole is positioned to the side, giving you complete shade without obstruction above your seating area. Plus, you can rotate the canopy 360° and tilt it to follow the sun.
How heavy should the base be for a cantilever parasol?
Plan for a minimum of 90–120 kg for cantilever parasols of 300×300 cm or larger. Smaller models (250×250 cm) are fine with 60–80 kg. Always use the minimum weight recommended by the manufacturer.
Is a cantilever parasol wind-resistant?
Cantilever parasols are more stable than they appear thanks to the heavy base, but always collapse them in winds of force 5 or above. Models with wind ventilation openings are particularly wind-resistant.
Can I place a cantilever parasol on a wooden terrace?
Yes, with a cross base with tiles or a wheeled base you can place a cantilever parasol on any flat surface. A ground-mounted base is not suitable for wooden terraces.
What size cantilever parasol is right for my lounge set?
Measure the outer dimensions of your lounge set and choose a cantilever parasol that is at least 50 cm wider and deeper. For a lounge set of 250×200 cm, a 300×300 cm cantilever parasol is ideal.
How much does a cantilever parasol cost?
At Boender Outdoor, cantilever parasols start from around €299. Mid-range models cost €500–€900 and premium cantilever parasols with Sunbrella fabric are between €1,000 and €2,000.
Can a cantilever parasol stay outside all year?
The aluminium frame is weather-resistant, but the canopy and mechanism will last longer if you protect them with a parasol cover when not in season. Always collapse the parasol in rain and storms.
How do I maintain a cantilever parasol?
Clean the canopy with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Rinse the frame with a garden hose. Lightly lubricate the hinges annually with silicone spray. Use a parasol cover during winter months.
