How does an in-ground parasol base work?
An in-ground parasol base consists of a steel or aluminium tube placed in the ground — typically in a concrete foundation approximately 40×40×50 cm. The parasol is inserted into the tube and stands rock-solid. After the season, you remove the parasol; the tube remains invisible in the ground with a closing cap.

A cross foot is moveable but takes up space on your terrace and requires heavy tiles. An in-ground base is permanent but invisible and maximally stable. Choose a cross foot if you want to move the parasol occasionally; choose an in-ground base if the position is fixed.
Installation and assembly
Most in-ground parasol bases can be installed yourself with basic tools:
- Dig a hole approximately 40×40×50 cm
- Place the ground tube level in the centre
- Fill the hole with quick-setting concrete (approximately 4–6 bags of 25 kg)
- Let the concrete cure for 24–48 hours
- Place the parasol in the tube
Tip: install the in-ground base before laying tiles or paving for a seamless result.

Most in-ground bases are installed 40–60 cm deep in a concrete foundation. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Can I install an in-ground parasol base myself?
Yes, with a spade, spirit level and quick-setting concrete, a handy DIYer can install the base in an afternoon. Let the concrete cure for 24–48 hours before placing the parasol.
Does every parasol fit in an in-ground base?
Check the mast diameter. In-ground bases have a specific inner diameter. Always choose a base that is compatible with your parasol or use an adapter ring.
Can I remove the parasol in winter?
Yes, the parasol slides out of the ground tube. Close the tube with a cap to keep dirt and rainwater out. The ground tube remains permanently in the ground.
Is an in-ground base suitable on every surface?
In-ground bases are suitable in soil, lawn and under paving. On an existing tiled terrace you must remove tiles. On a wooden deck, an in-ground base is not suitable.
How much does an in-ground parasol base cost?
In-ground parasol bases start from around €100. Premium models with stainless steel tube and matching cover plate cost €150–€250. Concrete costs approximately €20–€30 extra.
Do I need building permission?
