Is the discount genuine?
Around Black Friday you see big percentages everywhere. But a discount only means something if you know what you're comparing it to. Since May 28, 2022, there's a clear rule in the Netherlands: if a store announces a price reduction, the original price must be the lowest price from the 30 days before. A price that goes up just before Black Friday and then comes down with a discount doesn't count as a genuine discount.
How to check a discount
- Look at the product page for the price trend: is the price now lower than in the past weeks?
- Compare the original price with what the product cost a month ago
- Compare stores: the lowest price isn't always at the store with the biggest discount
- Calculate in euros: 10% off a lounge set is more than 30% off a cushion
Only looking at the percentage
A high percentage on an inflated original price yields less than a small, genuine price drop. Look at the price you pay.
Buying under time pressure
Countdown timers and "only 2 left in stock" are meant to make you decide quickly. If you've already compared your product, you don't need to hesitate.
Forgetting delivery time and returns
Large garden furniture is sometimes only delivered weeks later. Check the store for delivery time and return conditions before ordering.
