Once summer is over, garden furniture goes indoors, and that is exactly when it becomes cheaper in the shops. But when does the garden furniture sale really start, and how do you tell whether a discount is also a bargain? In this article you can read which sale moments there are in a year, what to expect in each period, which types of sale stock there are, and how to recognise a genuine discount using the was-price, the 30-day rule and the price chart. We compare prices at various shops and sell nothing ourselves: you always order from the shop.
In short: the garden furniture sale starts at most shops after the summer holidays and continues into autumn. Black Friday follows, and at some shops a clearance in January. There is no fixed date. Whether a discount is genuine you can tell from the lowest price of the 30 days before and from the price history on the product page. What is cheaper right now is listed on offers.
Why garden furniture goes on sale
Garden furniture is a seasonal product. In spring and early summer everyone wants a new garden set or lounge set at the same time. After the summer holidays that demand drops quickly. Shops are then still left with stock, while the new collection for next year is already on its way. Large garden furniture also takes up a lot of room in the warehouse. Marking down prices is often more profitable for a shop than leaving everything to sit through the winter.
For you, this means that the further the season goes, the greater the chance of a lower price, but also the smaller the choice. The sale is therefore mainly interesting if you are flexible about model, colour or size, or if you already know exactly which product you want and it happens to be marked down.
The sale moments of the year
There is no national sale date: each shop decides for itself when it reduces prices. Even so, many shops follow the same pattern. Think of it as a guideline, not a promise.
| Moment | What you often see | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Late summer | Clearance starts | Choice still fairly good |
| Autumn | Further reductions | Colours and sizes sell out |
| Black Friday | Individual deals | Often smaller discounts |
| January | Last remnants | Small choice |
Late summer: the start of the clearance
At most shops the garden furniture sale begins after the summer holidays. Demand falls and this season's collection needs to make way. This is the moment with the best balance between price and choice: some of the range is already discounted, while many models are still available in several colours or sizes. Moreover, if the late summer weather is good, you can still enjoy the furniture for a few weeks.
Autumn: further reductions, less choice
In autumn, shops often reduce prices further to get rid of the last stock. What is left is sometimes only available in one colour or as separate parts. Physical shops also often sell off their showroom models during this period. If you are flexible and have a dry place to store the furniture until spring, this can be a good-value moment.
Black Friday: deals, not a major clearance
Around Black Friday, at the end of November, many shops take part with special offers. For garden furniture these are usually smaller than for electronics, for example, and they often concern individual products rather than a complete clearance. How prices look this year, with the figures from our own measurements, can be found in Black Friday garden furniture 2026.
January: the last remnants
January is known as a sales month, but for garden furniture the range is small by then. Some shops clear the last remnants before the new collection arrives. If you find exactly what you are looking for in January, that is a bonus. If you are after a particular model, you will have more choice in spring. Which moment suits your situation best is explained in when to buy a garden set.
A sale price is only a bargain if you would have wanted the product even without the discount. Choose first what suits your garden, and only then look at the timing.
Types of sale stock
Not every discount is the same. Behind the word sale are different types of stock, each with its own point of attention.
- Clearance of the collection: new products from this season that need to make way. You get a regular new product on the normal terms.
- Last pieces and separate parts: sometimes only the table is still available, or just two chairs. Check whether you can still buy extra chairs or cushions later, because after the season a model sometimes disappears from the range.
- Showroom models: furniture that has been on display in a shop. Inspect it carefully for scratches and stains, and ask whether all cushions and parts are still included.
- B-grade or damaged packaging: a product with a small cosmetic flaw or a damaged box. Ask what the fault is: defects that are reported in advance are not covered by the guarantee.
Tip: buy the cover in the same round
If you buy a set in autumn, it usually has to get through the winter first. Get a breathable protective cover that is slightly larger than the set. You can read how to do this properly in covering garden furniture.
How to recognise a genuine discount
During the sale you see crossed-out prices everywhere. But a discount only means something if you know what you are comparing it with. Pay attention to three things.
The was-price and the 30-day rule
Since 28 May 2022, a clear rule has applied in the Netherlands: when a shop announces a price reduction, the was-price must be the lowest price the shop asked in the 30 days before. A price that goes up just before the sale and then comes down again with a discount may therefore not be presented as a reduction.
Was-price or recommended price?
If there is no earlier price from the shop itself, but a recommended retail price or a price from elsewhere, then that is not a price reduction by the shop itself. Such a comparison is allowed, but says little if almost nobody actually asks that recommended price. In that case, look mainly at what the same product costs at other shops.
The price history on the product page
On every product page you compare the price at different shops. Below that we build a price history: since October 2026 we retrieve the current prices every day. Once there are enough measurements, you will see a chart with the lowest price of the past 30 days and the lowest price since we started measuring. If the sale price is not below that, the discount is mainly a high was-price. You can read how to interpret the chart step by step in when to buy a garden set.
Genuine discount at a glance
- The price is below the lowest price of the 30 days before
- Other shops do not ask less for the same product
- The shipping costs do not cancel out the saving
- You know whether it is a new product, a showroom model or a B-grade item
- You had already considered the product without the discount
Preparing for the sale in 4 steps
If you go into the sale unprepared, you will soon buy something just because it is cheap. With a bit of groundwork you will know straight away whether an offer is worth it.
Measure your terrace, determine how many seats you need and choose whether you want to dine, lounge or both. Still unsure about the type of furniture? The selection guide will help you on your way with a few questions.
Look for two or three products that all suit you. If you are flexible about colour or brand, the chance is greater that one of your favourites ends up in the sale.
Set a price alert with your target price on each favourite product. You will get an email as soon as the price drops below it. For this you need a free account.
When you get a notification, look at the price history, compare the shops and read the delivery time and return conditions. Only then order from the shop of your choice.
Not sure yet what a reasonable price is for what you are looking for? Then first read what an average garden set costs. And if you want to know which brands are worth waiting for, see what is a good brand of garden furniture.
The offers page
On offers you will find all the products we compare that are currently below the shop's was-price: from garden sets and lounge sets to parasols, lighting and covers. The page is updated every day, so what is on it today may be gone tomorrow. Handy during the sale: you see in one overview what is cheaper right now, without visiting every shop.
Do bear in mind that the discount percentage on that page is based on the was-price the shop itself states. Use the page to discover, and the product page to decide.
Five products that are currently below the was-price
To make it concrete: at our latest update, these five products were below the shop's was-price. Prices and discounts change every day, so the card and the product page will show whether this is still the case. The specifications come from the product information.

Checklist before you pay
Found an offer you like? Then go through these points and tick off what is right.
- The sale price is below the lowest price of the past 30 days
- I have checked the same price at at least one other shop
- I know whether it is a new product, a showroom model or a B-grade item
- All parts and cushions are included, or I know what is missing
- The size fits on my terrace, including room to move
- I have checked the shipping costs and delivery time
- I know the return conditions and who pays the return costs
- I have a dry place or a cover until spring
Common mistakes in the sale
Trusting a was-price that never applied
A high crossed-out price means nothing if the product was never sold at that price. Look at the price of the past 30 days and at what other shops are asking.
Buying a single table without matching chairs
In the sale, sometimes only one part of a series is still available. If you are not sure you can get the rest later, choose a complete set instead.
Forgetting shipping and returns
Large garden furniture is often delivered by a separate courier. A lower price with high shipping or return costs can sometimes save you less than a smaller discount at another shop.
Thinking you have fewer rights in a sale
The statutory guarantee and, when buying online, the cooling-off period also apply to reduced products. Don't let anyone convince you that reduced automatically means no guarantee, but do read which defects were reported in advance.
Buying because it is nearly sold out
Messages such as "only 1 left in stock" are designed to make you decide quickly. If you have not worked through your checklist, it is not a bargain but a gamble.
Tip: ask about showroom models
If you buy at a physical shop, ask in autumn whether any showroom models are being sold. Inspect them carefully and have any defects noted on the receipt, so you know later what was already there.
Frequently asked questions
When does the garden furniture sale start?
There is no fixed start date. At most shops, garden furniture clearance begins after the summer holidays, when demand falls and space is needed for the new collection. Some shops start earlier, while others only reduce prices in the autumn. After that come Black Friday in November and, at some shops, a clearance of leftover stock in January.
When are garden furniture discounts at their biggest?
This varies by shop and by product. Prices often drop further as the season progresses, but at the same time the choice becomes smaller: popular colours and sizes may already be sold out. If you want a particular model, track that model's price directly rather than waiting for a general sale.
How do I spot a genuine discount in a sale?
When a shop announces a price reduction, the was-price in the Netherlands must be the lowest price of the 30 days before. Also compare the price with the price history on the product page and with other shops. A comparison with a recommended retail price is not a price reduction by the shop itself, so focus mainly on what the product costs elsewhere.
Do I have the same rights on sale items?
Yes. The statutory guarantee also applies to reduced products: a product must do what you can reasonably expect of it. Only defects that the shop clearly disclosed in advance, such as a scratch on a showroom model, are excluded. If you buy online, you generally also have a 14-day cooling-off period. Do read the returns conditions, as return costs are often payable by you.
Is January a good time to buy garden furniture?
It can be, especially if you are flexible. In January some shops clear the last remnants of the season, but the choice is then limited. If you are looking for a specific model or colour, you are more likely to find it in spring, when the new collections arrive.
Where can I see which garden furniture is currently on offer?
The offers page lists all the products we compare that are currently priced below the shop's was-price. The page is updated every day. Click through to the product page to view the price history and compare shops before you decide.
