What Is a Good Garden Furniture Brand? How to Recognise One

Table of contents

What is a good garden furniture brand? We get that question a lot, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're looking for. A brand that makes brilliant parasols doesn't necessarily have good lounge sets. And a well-known name is no guarantee that your table or cushion is good. In this article you'll read how to recognise a good brand, what makes the brands on Boender Outdoor stand out, and what to watch out for with each one. Everything we say about a brand comes from the product information we compare ourselves.

💡

In short: a good brand is open about materials, dimensions and warranty and also supplies loose cushions, covers or spare parts. Choose a specialist for parasols, cushions or lighting, and an allrounder for furniture. Check the brand table and run the 5-step brand check before you order.

How do you recognise a good brand?

You don't recognise a good garden furniture brand by its logo, but by what it tells you and what it delivers. Look out for these four things:

  • Clear specifications. A good brand states the material of the frame, the fabric or weave, the tabletop and the cushion cover, plus dimensions such as seat height, seat depth and cushion thickness. The more complete the information, the easier it is to compare.
  • A clear warranty. Not just how long, but also what it covers. A frame, a cushion cover and a parasol mechanism wear in different ways.
  • Spare parts and accessories. Can you later find replacement cushions, a matching cover or a parasol base from the same brand? Then your purchase will last longer.
  • A consistent range. A brand with a steady line of materials and dimensions makes it easy to buy more later, such as an extra chair or a cover in exactly the right shape.

Materials largely determine how long garden furniture lasts. Aluminium doesn't rust, rope and wicker need the occasional wipe-down, and wood needs more maintenance. You can read more about this in which garden furniture is weather-resistant.

Does price or name say anything about quality?

In the past, garden furniture brands were often divided into A-brands and B-brands. That doesn't help you much. Within one brand you'll find both simple and elaborate products, and two lounge sets from the same brand can have a different frame, different cushions and a different warranty. The name on the box therefore tells you less than the specifications of the product itself.

A higher price can indicate a thicker cushion, better fabric or a smarter mechanism, but you should then also see that in the product information. If it isn't there, you simply don't know. So always compare product with product, not brand with brand.

Look first at what the specifications say, and only then at the brand. A good brand has nothing to hide and simply states the material, dimensions and warranty with the product.

Specialist or allrounder?

It helps to group brands by what they focus on. An allrounder makes tables, chairs, lounge sets and benches that match in style. A specialist concentrates on one thing, such as shade, cushions or lighting, and offers many sizes and variants within that area.

In practice you combine them: a lounge set from an allrounder, a parasol and cover from a shade specialist, and cushions from a cushion brand. Just make sure the sizes match, because a cover or cushion from another brand has to fit your furniture.

Per brand: strengths and watch-outs

Garden Impressions: the allrounder for furniture

Garden Impressions has the broadest furniture range: garden chairs, garden tables, lounge sets, garden benches and garden sets, supplemented with parasols and accessories. Most of the range has an aluminium frame. You also see a lot of rope and wicker weaves, and tabletops from Vironwood and Centostone, among others. Most products state a 2-year warranty in the product information.

Note: with a few products the specifications contradict each other, for example about the number of seats or the material of a teak look. If in doubt, check the photos and the full description. You can read more about the brand in Garden Impressions reviews.

Platinum: the specialist in shade and protection

Platinum Sun & Shade focuses on parasols, shade sails and protective covers. For the parasols you'll see a lot of aluminium frames and ribs, and various canopy qualities. The AeroCover covers are available for lounge sets, garden sets, parasols and more, in fixed shapes and sizes.

Note: a cover only works if the size is right. Measure your lounge set or table and choose a cover that is just a little larger. If you want to know how this brand performs in practice, read Platinum Sun & Shade reviews.

Madison: cushions and parasols

Madison is mainly strong in garden cushions: seat cushions, decorative cushions, sun lounger cushions, lounge cushions and bench cushions in many sizes and colours. Madison also has its own line of parasols and parasol bases. Handy if you want to give your existing garden furniture new cushions.

Hartman, 4 Seasons Outdoor and other furniture brands

Besides Garden Impressions, you can compare furniture from more brands. Hartman has many adjustable garden chairs in aluminium, such as the Napoli, Da Vinci and Salvatore, and garden sets with those chairs. 4 Seasons Outdoor is strong in chair-and-sofa lounge sets and low lounge tables in teak or ceramic; the Taste by 4 Seasons line focuses on dining garden sets with ceramic garden tables. Also curious about 4 Seasons Outdoor? Read 4 Seasons Outdoor reviews. Tierra Outdoor has aluminium dining chairs and tables with a Trespa top, and Suns offers the Nova tables in sintered stone, among others. Apple Bee works with series such as Condor (aluminium with teak) and Sling (teak), with lounge sets, dining garden sets and cushions that the brand calls BEE WETT; you can read more in Apple Bee reviews. Kettler and Lafuma focus on chairs that you can adjust or fold; from Lafuma you mainly compare relax chairs with a steel frame, such as the RSX Clip.

Note: with these brands the warranty varies per product. Some state 5 years in the product information, others 1 or 2 years, or no period at all. So check per product, not per brand.

Garden Lights and Keij Kamado: finishing touches for your garden

Not garden furniture, but brands that complete your terrace. Garden Lights makes 12V garden lighting, such as spotlights, standing lamps, deck lights and complete sets, with a 5-year warranty stated in the product information. Keij Kamado makes kamados and accessories. For the Legend series, the product information states a lifetime warranty on the dome, lid, firebox and fire ring: a good example of a warranty that clearly says what it covers.

Checking a brand in 5 steps

Not sure about a brand or a product? With these five steps you'll know where you stand within ten minutes.

1
Read the full specifications

Look for the material of the frame, fabric or weave and cushion cover, and dimensions such as seat height and cushion thickness. If a lot is missing, ask the retailer before you order.

2
Check what the warranty covers

Is there only a period stated, or also which parts are included? Cushions and moving parts are often treated differently from the frame.

3
Look for loose cushions and covers

Check whether the brand or a specialist has matching cushions and covers in the size of your furniture. That determines how long you'll enjoy it.

4
Read reviews from buyers

Reviews show how a product holds up after a few seasons, and how the retailer handles complaints.

5
Compare price and retailer

The same product doesn't cost the same everywhere. Compare retailers and also look at delivery time and shipping costs.

Checklist: what should you look out for in a brand?

Tick off what you've checked. The more ticks, the better you'll know what you're buying.

  • The material of the frame and fabric or weave is stated in the product information
  • The cushion cover is described, including whether it is water-repellent
  • The warranty period is known, and you know what it covers
  • The dimensions match your terrace, including walking space
  • There are loose cushions or protective covers in the right size
  • You've read reviews from other buyers
  • You've compared the price at several retailers

How to quickly choose a good brand

  • If you're looking for furniture, consider an allrounder such as Garden Impressions, Hartman or 4 Seasons Outdoor
  • Chairs that you adjust or fold: also look at Kettler and Lafuma
  • For parasols, shade sails and covers, Platinum is the specialist
  • New cushions or a parasol to add: look at Madison
  • Always compare product with product, not brand with brand

Common mistakes

Buying on brand name alone

Within one brand, materials, cushions and warranty vary per product. Read the specifications of the model you want, not just the brand's reputation.

Assuming every cushion is water-repellent

Even within one cushion brand this varies by range. And water-repellent isn't waterproof: store cushions dry when it rains. Read how to store garden cushions.

Not reading the warranty

A long warranty on one part says nothing about the rest. Check whether the frame, cushions and mechanism are covered, and keep your proof of purchase.

Ordering a cover or cushion by guesswork

If you combine brands, measure your furniture first. A cover that is too tight tears sooner, and one that is too loose catches the wind.

Mixing brands is fine

You don't have to buy everything from one brand. An aluminium lounge set, a cantilever parasol from a shade specialist and cushions from a cushion brand can go together perfectly well, as long as the sizes match. Have a look at Platinum parasols, Madison parasols and rope lounge sets.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good garden furniture brand?

A good brand tells you exactly where a product is made, offers a clear warranty, supplies replacement parts such as cushions and covers in suitable sizes, and has a range that fits your needs. A well-known name on its own says little: check the specifications of the product you want to buy.

Is a more expensive brand always better?

No. A higher price says something about the brand, the design or the finish, but not automatically about the quality of your product. Compare the frame material, cushion fabric, warranty and load capacity instead. Two products from the same brand can differ considerably on those points.

How long a warranty does a good garden furniture brand offer?

It varies by brand and by product. Garden Impressions states a 2-year warranty in the product information for most items, Garden Lights mentions 5 years on its lighting, and Keij Kamado offers a lifetime warranty on the ceramic parts of its kamados. With Hartman and 4 Seasons Outdoor it depends on the product, and for Lafuma's reclining chairs a 5-year warranty is usually stated. Always check exactly what the warranty covers, as the frame, cushions and moving parts are often treated differently.

Which brand is good for parasols?

Platinum specialises in shade: cantilever parasols, centre-pole parasols, shade sails and replacement covers. Madison also has its own parasol range, such as the Timor Luxe 400 cm with UV 50+ and water-repellent fabric. Garden Impressions and Hartman sell parasols alongside their garden furniture, while 4 Seasons Outdoor offers cantilever parasols including the Siesta Premium and Hacienda, as well as Doppler balcony parasols. Choose based on size, tilt function and base, not just on brand.

Are Madison garden cushions water-repellent?

Not all of them. The product information states for each cushion whether it is water-repellent or has a water-repellent outdoor coating. The Panama bench cushion measuring 120x48 cm, for example, does not have a water-repellent outdoor coating. So bring cushions indoors or under cover when it rains, even if they are water-repellent.

Does Boender Outdoor sell garden furniture itself?

No. Boender Outdoor compares garden furniture from different brands and shows you which shop you can buy them from. You place your order and pay at that shop, and you also arrange the warranty and service there.
