Buying a garden table: What to look out for

A good garden table often forms the centrepiece of your outdoor space. Whether you're planning an intimate dinner in the garden, organising a summer barbecue or simply wanting to enjoy a quiet morning coffee, the right garden table makes all the difference. But with so many choices in sizes, materials and styles, it's not always easy to make the right choice. In this blog, we've set out the most important points to consider for you.

1. The right size for your outdoor space

Before you fall in love with a beautiful garden table, it's important to consider the available space. How much room do you have in your garden, on your terrace or balcony? And how many people do you want to seat regularly?

  • For small balconies or compact city gardens, a round or square table is often the most practical. These take up less space and still create a cosy setting.
  • Do you have a larger garden or do you regularly entertain guests? Then a rectangular or oval table is recommended. Extending tables offer extra flexibility.
  • Always allow for walking space around the table. Plan for at least 70 cm of space on all sides so that chairs can be easily pulled up and you have sufficient freedom of movement.

2. Material choice: appearance and maintenance

Garden tables are available in various materials, each with their own appearance and maintenance requirements. Here is an overview of the most common options:

Teak wood

Teak wood tables have a warm, natural appearance. The wood is naturally oily, making it resistant to the elements. Over time, teak develops a beautiful silver-grey colour. If you prefer to keep the original colour, you can treat the wood with special teak oil.

Aluminium

An aluminium garden table is light, strong and modern. The material is completely low-maintenance and doesn't rust. Aluminium tables work well in a sleek or minimalist garden.

Wicker or plastic

These materials are lightweight, easy to clean and often affordable. They're ideal for a more rustic or playful look, but be mindful of quality – cheaper varieties can fade or wear more quickly.

Ceramic or HPL (High Pressure Laminate)

Tables with ceramic or HPL tops are particularly strong, scratch-resistant and heat-resistant. They require little maintenance and often have a modern, luxury appearance. Combined with an aluminium base, they're also very durable.

3. Chair-to-table ratio

A common mistake when buying a loose garden table is not matching it well to the height and width of your garden chairs. The standard height of a garden table is approximately 75 cm, but some chairs with thick cushions won't fit well underneath. Make sure you can combine the chairs you have (or want to buy) well with the table, both for comfort and style.

4. Weather resistance and maintenance

In the Netherlands, a garden table needs to be able to take a bit of a knock. Rain, sun, wind and temperature fluctuations all put demands on a table that can handle them well. So pay attention to the following:

  • Choose materials suitable for staying outdoors year-round, or provide a good storage place for winter.
  • Use a protective cover when the table is not being used for longer periods. This significantly extends its lifespan.
  • Clean the table regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh cleaning products that could damage the surface.

5. Style and atmosphere in your garden

A garden table is more than just a functional piece of furniture – it contributes to the atmosphere and style of your garden. Think carefully about the look you're after. If you like modern and sleek, an aluminium or ceramic table fits well. If you prefer warm and natural, wood is a logical choice.

Also think about the rest of your garden furniture. A garden table in the same style as your chairs, lounge furniture or parasol creates unity and calm in your garden design.
