Big Green Egg: compare sizes and accessories
The Big Green Egg is a ceramic kamado: an egg-shaped charcoal barbecue on which you can grill, smoke, bake and slow-cook. The thick ceramic wall holds the heat well, so with the air vent at the bottom and the damper on top you can maintain a stable temperature. On this page you compare Big Green Egg models and a wide range of EGG accessories, with the current price at the shop. You can also view all kamados, such as the Keij Kamado and the Weber Summit Kamado.
Which Big Green Egg size?
The comparison includes the MiniMax, Medium, Large and XL, and The Onyx Large. The bigger the EGG, the more grill grate space and the larger the cuts of meat you can fit, but also the heavier it is and the more charcoal it uses.
- MiniMax: compact, also available with a stand and handles, for a small household or to take along
- Medium: for a small family or a smaller terrace
- Large: the versatile size for a family, with many compatible accessories
- XL: for large gatherings and big cuts of meat
Please note: some EGGs are offered without a stand. Check with the shop what comes with the product. A Nest (stand), EGG Mates (side tables) or the Modular table system are listed separately in the comparison.
Accessories for the Big Green Egg
- ConvEGGtor: a ceramic plate between the fire and the grill grate for indirect cooking, smoking and baking, available in a version for each size
- EGGspander: an expansion set for cooking on multiple levels
- Pizza stones and baking stones: for pizza and bread
- Cast iron: grill grates, plancha, skillet and dutch oven
- Temperature: thermometers, the rEGGulator and the EGGenius temperature controller
- Maintenance: ash tool, brushes, covers and replacement parts such as felt, springs and the fire ring
- Charcoal and smoking wood: Big Green Egg charcoal and smoking chips or chunks of hickory, apple, pecan and mesquite, among others
Accessories often differ by size: check the product page to see whether something fits your EGG. See all barbecue accessories.
Big Green Egg or another kamado?
The Big Green Egg is one of the best-known kamado brands. Compare it with the Keij Kamado and the Weber Summit Kamado in the overview of all kamados, or read Big Green Egg alternative: Keij Kamado compared. Torn between a kamado and another type? Also see the pellet barbecues and charcoal barbecues.
Use and maintenance
Use coarse natural charcoal and light it with firelighters, not lighter fluid, as ceramic absorbs odours. When cooking at high temperatures, first open the lid a crack, so that not too much oxygen reaches the fire at once and no flare-up occurs. After a few sessions, remove the ash with an ash tool so the air vent stays clear. See also the thermometers and barbecue covers.
Frequently asked questions
Which Big Green Egg size should I choose?
For most families the Large is a versatile choice. The MiniMax and Medium are more compact, for a small household or to take along; the XL is for large gatherings. Also consider accessories, as these differ by size.
Is the Big Green Egg supplied with a stand?
This varies by offer. Some EGGs are offered without a stand, while others, such as the MiniMax with handles, come with one. Check with the shop what comes with the product; a Nest or table is listed separately in the comparison.
What is a ConvEGGtor?
A ceramic plate that you place between the coals and the grill grate. The food then sits out of the direct heat, so you can cook, smoke and bake indirectly. There is a ConvEGGtor for each EGG size.
What is the difference between a Big Green Egg and a Keij Kamado?
Both are ceramic kamados that run on charcoal. They differ in sizes, equipment, accessories and price. Put the models side by side on the kamado page or read our article on a Big Green Egg alternative.
