Camping lighting: lanterns, head torches and tent lights
Good light makes evenings at the campsite a lot easier. In this category you compare camping lanterns, head torches and tent lights, with the brightness, the power source and the current price at the shop. All camping gear together is in camping.
Which light for what?
- Camping lantern: lights up the table or the whole pitch. There are lanterns on batteries, with a rechargeable battery and on gas.
- Head torch: keeps your hands free, handy for pitching the tent in the dark or on the way to the toilet block.
- Tent light: a small light or string light to hang in the tent or under the awning.
Brightness and power
Brightness is given in lumens. Inside the tent a low setting is often enough; for a whole table or pitch, choose a lantern with more lumens. A rechargeable light charges via usb, a battery light is handy when you have no power. The filters let you choose by type, brightness and power source.
Gas lantern
A gas lantern gives a lot of light and heat, but it is only meant for outdoor use. Never use it in a tent or any other enclosed space, let it cool down before packing it away and keep it away from tent fabric. The cartridges are in gas and burners.
Handy at the campsite
Hang a lantern with a hook or handle under the awning or in the tent. For a longer holiday, bring a light you can charge from a power bank, or spare batteries. In the evening, a warm light colour is often more pleasant around the tent than bright white light; many lights have several settings.

Frequently asked questions
How many lumens does a camping lantern need?
For light inside the tent, a lamp with a few hundred lumens or fewer is often enough. For a table or a whole pitch, choose a lantern with more lumens, ideally with a dimmer so you do not always have to use it at full brightness.
Is a battery light or a rechargeable light better?
A rechargeable light charges via usb or a power bank and costs less in the long run. A battery light is handy if you are without power for a long time, because batteries are easy to swap.
Can a gas lamp go in the tent?
No. A gas lantern gets hot and uses oxygen, which can produce carbon monoxide. Inside the tent, only use an electric light, and hang a gas lantern outdoors only.
