The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and your lounge set is all ready for cosy summer evenings. But... those cushions? They could use a refresh after a season outside. No worries – with a few simple tips you'll keep your lounge set cushions and garden set cushions fresh, clean and in top condition!
Why is it important to wash your cushions?
You use your cushions intensively: to relax, to eat, to have drinks – and sometimes even as a play area for the kids. Dirt, stains, sunscreen and rain can damage your cushions. By cleaning them regularly, you extend their lifespan and enjoy a fresh and neat appearance.

How do you wash your lounge set cushions?
Most lounge set cushions have a removable cover. Check the label to see if the cover can be machine washed.
Step-by-step:
- Unzip the cover from the inner cushion.
- Check the wash label – usually you can wash the cover at 30 degrees.
- Use a mild detergent (no bleach or fabric softener).
- Let the cover air dry, preferably not in direct sunlight.
Note: it's better not to put the inner cushion itself in the washing machine. Does the inner cushion have a stain? Use a cloth with lukewarm water and some mild soap instead.
Cleaning garden set cushions: just as important!
The cushions of your garden set can also use a clean-up after a while. The process is essentially the same as with lounge set cushions, but these cushions are often slightly thinner and get wet more quickly during a shower.
Tip: Do your garden set cushions not have a removable cover? Then use a soft brush and a solution of lukewarm water with green soap. Scrub gently, rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

Cleaning garden chair cushions
These cushions are usually somewhat more compact and are often attached with ties or velcro. Garden chair cushions also need a refresh after a season outside.
Here's how to do it:
- Removable cover? Check the wash label, wash at 30 degrees and let air dry.
- Fixed cover? Clean with a cloth or sponge using lukewarm water and mild soap.
- Stubborn stains? Use some baking soda with water for extra cleaning power.
Extra tips to keep your cushions looking good longer:
- Store your cushions in a waterproof storage box or in the shed when not in use.
- Use a protective cover over your lounge set or garden set if rain is forecast.
- Let cushions dry thoroughly before storing them – this prevents mould and unpleasant odours.
