Compare fire baskets: steel and Corten steel
A fire basket is the classic way to burn a wood fire in the garden. Thanks to the open or cut-out sides you see the flames from every angle, and the fire draws air from below and from the sides. Here you compare fire baskets, fire buckets, fire globes and tabletop fire pits from Esschert Design, RedFire, BonFeu, CookKing and Höfats, with the current price at the shop.
Shapes and materials
You will find round and square fire baskets, fire buckets, globe-shaped fire balls with laser-cut patterns and baskets shaped like a crate or beer crate, such as the Höfats Crate and Beer Box. Most are made of black steel; Corten steel develops a rust-brown layer outdoors. If you want to burn wood and pellets, take a look at the RedFire Volcano, whose smaller sizes are designed for the table. The Material and Diameter filters help you find a basket that suits your garden.
What to look for
- Height and size: a tall basket gives a better view of the flames, a wide basket more room for wood.
- Grill grate: the With grill grate filter shows which baskets have one, such as the BonFeu BonVes.
- Base and ash plate: a base plate or ash plate catches ashes and embers. Separate base plates are among the accessories.
Burning safely
Because of the open sides, sparks can escape from a fire basket. Only use it in the open air on a stable, non-combustible surface, and never under a canopy, parasol or roof. Keep plenty of distance from your house, trees, hedges and fences and follow the manual. Never leave the fire unattended, keep water or a bucket of sand close at hand and check the local rules where you live.

Frequently asked questions
Does a fire basket throw sparks?
It can, especially with wood that crackles. A spark guard helps. Use the basket in the open air, keep plenty of distance from anything that can burn and never leave the fire unattended.
What wood should I burn in a fire basket?
Dry, untreated wood in a size that fits the basket, or the fuel stated in the manual. No rubbish, painted or treated wood, and never methylated spirits or lighter fluid on a burning fire.
Can a fire basket stand on paving?
Paving is a stable, non-combustible surface, but it can discolour from the heat or from the rust of Corten steel. A base plate helps. Never put a fire basket on wooden decking or on grass without protection.
