Have you got a beautiful rattan garden set that looks a bit weathered and dull these days? Don't worry – you really don't need to buy new furniture. With a few simple steps, your rattan garden furniture will look fresh and inviting again. At Boender Outdoor Garden Furniture, we're happy to give you tips on how to refresh your outdoor furniture and continue to enjoy it.
Why does rattan weather?
Rattan is a natural material that is very popular because of its warm, cosy appearance. But when exposed to sun, rain and wind for a long time, it can become brittle, discolour or even come loose. Fortunately, you can do something about that!

Step 1: Clean it thoroughly
Start with a good clean. Use lukewarm water with a mild soap (for example, green soap) and a soft brush or cloth. Scrub gently, especially between the crevices. Then let it dry well in the shade – not in full sun, as this can dry out the rattan even more.
Tip: Don't use a pressure washer! This will damage the material.
Step 2: Repair where necessary
Are there any loose or broken pieces? You can often carefully weave them back in or glue them with wood glue. Small holes or cracks can be filled with a mixture of wood glue and sawdust or rattan fibres (available at hobby shops).
Step 3: Refresh with oil or varnish
Once the rattan is dry and completely clean, you can treat it with a natural rattan or teak oil. This nourishes the material and brings the colour back to life. You can also opt for a transparent varnish for extra protection against moisture.
Note: First test a small area on the underside to see how the material reacts.
Step 4: Keep it looking nice
Once your rattan furniture is gleaming again, you'll naturally want to keep it that way. Cover your furniture in bad weather or put it in the shed. Use cushions or covers, and give it a maintenance touch-up from time to time.

Bonus: Or choose synthetic rattan
Do you want the look of rattan but not the maintenance? Then synthetic wicker might be something for you. It has the same charm, but is much more resistant to weather and wind. At Boender Outdoor Garden Furniture, you'll find a wide range of weather-resistant garden furniture with the look of rattan, but low-maintenance.
In short: with a little care, you can make your weathered rattan garden furniture shine like new again. And would you prefer a low-maintenance solution? Then feel free to take a look in our webshop or showroom!
