Kamado Joe alternative: honest comparison for the conscious buyer
The Kamado Joe is deservedly popular: thoughtful design, excellent ceramics and a large accessory ecosystem. But with a Classic III starting from €1,200 and a Big Joe III approaching €2,000, it's also a substantial investment. Anyone looking for a Kamado Joe alternative wants to know: what am I giving up, and what do I gain in return? In this article we set out the pros and cons fairly side by side, so you can make a well-considered choice.
Note: at Boender Outdoor we sell the Keij Kamado. We do our best to make an honest comparison, but bear that in mind when reading.
What makes Kamado Joe special?
Kamado Joe has built a strong reputation over recent years, partly thanks to a number of thoughtful innovations that not all competitors have:
- Divide & Conquer system — flexible multi-zone cooking setup on multiple levels, included as standard
- SlideShow Top — the adjustable top air system offers more precision than a standard slide valve
- Air Lift Hinge — the gas spring makes the lid light and safe to open, despite the heavy ceramics
- Large user community — many recipes, forums and YouTube content specific to Kamado Joe
- Broad dealer network — available at many garden centres and BBQ specialist shops in the Netherlands
- Years of refinement — the Classic III is the third generation, with improvements over each previous version
These are real, demonstrable advantages. If you want the maximum and budget is no concern, you're in good hands with a Kamado Joe.
When do you choose an alternative?
There are a few situations where it makes sense to look beyond Kamado Joe:
- Budget — the Classic III starts around €1,200; including stand and basic accessories you'll quickly end up over €1,500. If you want to spend less without compromising on ceramic quality, there are alternatives
- Accessory independence — many KJ accessories are size and brand-specific. If you want to use universal accessories, you sometimes pay extra with KJ
- Availability — popular KJ models are not always in stock
- First-time buyer — if you're buying a kamado for the first time, you may not always need all the premium features of the Classic III

Ceramic quality
Both brands use high-quality ceramics, but the composition differs. Kamado Joe uses a proprietary formulation; Keij works with cordierite ceramic — a material also used in professional pizza ovens and industrial furnaces due to its high thermal stability and shock resistance.
In practice, both perform well in terms of heat retention and temperature stability. Which ceramic is objectively "better" is difficult to assess without independent laboratory tests — both manufacturers claim the best quality. What we can say is that the Keij has a lifetime warranty on the ceramic, just like the Kamado Joe.
Accessories and compatibility
Kamado Joe has an extensive range of proprietary accessories — from the DoJoe pizza stone holder to the SloRoller indirect cooking system. These are specifically designed for KJ models and sometimes offer additional functionality. The downside is that you're dependent on one supplier and their associated pricing.
The Keij Kamado uses standard kamado dimensions, which means universal accessories from different brands fit. This gives more flexibility in accessory choice and price comparison. Browse our barbecue accessories range.
The Keij Kamado: what does it offer?
The Keij Kamado is a Dutch brand with high-quality cordierite ceramic and lifetime warranty. Two series:
- Keij Legend — premium series with Divide & Conquer system, available in 15, 21 and 23 inch in multiple colours
- Keij Pro — keener pricing, same ceramic quality, for those wanting to start with kamado cooking
Compared to Kamado Joe, the Air Lift Hinge is missing and the user community is smaller. The advantage is the purchase price and universal accessory compatibility. Whether that's the right trade-off depends on your priorities.
Conclusion: which brand is suitable for whom?
Kamado Joe is the best choice if you want the maximum, are prepared to invest and value a large accessory ecosystem and a broad community. It's a premium product that has earned its reputation.
Keij Kamado is a serious option if you're looking for high ceramic quality at a lower purchase price, and flexibility in accessory choice is important to you. It misses a few premium features of the Classic III, but delivers fully on the core function — cooking well at high and low temperatures.
