Ibiza garden design: Mediterranean atmosphere and furniture (2026)

Table of contents

Whitewashed walls, a terrace full of sun, a low bench with sand-coloured cushions and the scent of lavender. The Ibiza style brings that island feeling into your own garden, even if it's in Utrecht or Antwerp. It's all about light, relaxation and natural materials: white and sand as the base, woven wicker and rope, light wood and terracotta pots with Mediterranean plants. In this guide you'll read what defines the style, which colours and materials belong to it, which garden furniture suits it, which plants thrive in our climate and how to create shade. With a short style quiz, a step-by-step plan and a checklist for your own terrace.

💡

In short: an Ibiza garden is light, airy and natural. Choose white and sand as the base with terracotta and olive green as accents. Place one low lounge or dining set in acacia white wash, wicker or rope at the centre, plant olive, lavender and ornamental grasses in pots and provide shade with a parasol in white or ecru. Follow the 5-step plan.

What is the Ibiza garden style?

The Ibiza style is inspired by the white houses, beach clubs and dry, sunny gardens of the Spanish island. It is a relaxed variant of the Mediterranean style: less formal, lighter in colour and focused on lounging and sitting outside for hours. You'll recognise an Ibiza garden by:

  • A light base: white, off-white, sand and beige on walls, furniture, cushions and parasol.
  • Woven and natural materials: wicker, rope, light wood and jute or coconut for rugs.
  • Low lounge furniture: a wide bench with thick cushions you can sink into, often combined with a low dining table.
  • Terracotta and greenery: pots in earthy tones with olive, lavender, rosemary and grasses.
  • Soft evening light: lanterns, fairy lights and candles instead of one harsh lamp.

Where a modern garden revolves around contrast and clean lines, and a Japandi garden around calm and simplicity, an Ibiza garden may be summery and inviting. The aim is a place where you kick off your shoes after work and stay outside into the evening.

The secret of the Ibiza style doesn't lie in one expensive piece of furniture, but in light. The more white and sand you use on the large surfaces, the more the sun does the work. Terracotta and greenery are the salt in the stew: a few accents are enough.

Colours and materials

The palette of an Ibiza garden comes from the island itself: white façades, sandy beaches, earth, olive trees and the sea. Choose light tones for the large surfaces, such as furniture, parasol and rug. Then add warmth with terracotta, wood and greenery. This keeps the whole light and makes the accents easy to swap later on.

White, sand and terracotta

White and sand are the foundation. Off-white or ecru is often more practical than bright white, because dirt and pollen are less noticeable. Terracotta is the typical Mediterranean accent: in pots, a decorative cushion or a rug. Unglazed terracotta pots absorb water and can crack in frost, so keep them dry in winter or choose pots sold as frost-resistant.

Rattan, wicker and rope

Woven furniture is the heart of the Ibiza look. Natural rattan is a natural product and belongs under a canopy or indoors. Wicker is plastic weaving with the same appearance that can stay outdoors. Rope is soft, airy and gives a modern twist. Read more in what is rope material and how to care for wicker garden furniture.

Acacia white wash

Acacia with a white wash finish gives exactly that light, washed wood tone that suits Ibiza. It is real wood and therefore needs maintenance: the product information for the Talara advises treating the acacia wood annually with teak oil or a wood care product. You can read how to go about it in how to treat wooden garden furniture.

Garden furniture in Ibiza style

Ibiza furniture is low, comfortable and light in colour. Choose one set as the centrepiece and build around it with loose chairs, a rug and cushions. Below you'll find examples from our range. The specifications come from the product information; you can see the current prices on the cards.

Mediterranean planting

Plants make the difference between a white terrace and an Ibiza garden. Choose species that thrive in sun and in dry, well-draining soil. Many Mediterranean plants do very well in the Netherlands and Belgium in a pot in a sunny spot.

  • Olive tree: the symbol of the Mediterranean. In a large pot on the terrace, it's an instant eye-catcher. An olive can tolerate some frost, but in a pot the roots freeze more quickly, so protect it in severe frost.
  • Lavender: purple flowers, a wonderful scent and plenty of bees and butterflies. Lavender wants full sun and dry feet. Cut back after flowering, but not into the old, bare wood.
  • Rosemary: evergreen, fragrant and handy in the kitchen. Lovely in a terracotta pot next to the table.
  • Ornamental grasses: such as feather grass or pampas grass. They move in the wind and give that airy dune feeling.
  • Fig and palms: for an exotic, southern look. Choose a hardy variety or plant them in a pot you can move.
  • Bougainvillea: for vivid colour in summer. Not hardy, so bring it inside somewhere frost-free in winter.

Plant in groups of different heights: an olive as the highest point, lavender and rosemary in the middle, grasses in front. Large terracotta or white pots work best. Light-coloured gravel or chippings around the pots complete the Mediterranean picture and need little maintenance.

Watering with care

Mediterranean plants don't like wet feet. Make sure there are holes in the pot, a layer of gravel or crocks at the bottom, and water thoroughly now and then rather than a little every day.

Shade: parasols in white and ecru

A terrace in full sun is lovely, until half past one. A parasol in white, off-white or ecru fits seamlessly into the Ibiza style and keeps the light under the canopy soft. If the seating area is free-standing, a cantilever parasol is handy: the pole stands beside the set, so you can move freely under the canopy. For a balcony or a small table, a pole parasol is enough.

Ibiza or warm Mediterranean?

Did the style quiz land you on warm Mediterranean? Then you use the same base, but shift the palette towards the warm side. Here's how:

  • More terracotta and ochre: in pots, cushions and a rug. For example, a terracotta decorative cushion on a sand-coloured bench.
  • The table as the centrepiece: a long table for long evenings with family, such as the Ibiza lounge-dining table or the Santos with its corner bench.
  • Warmer wood: alongside white wash, natural acacia also works well. Browse the acacia lounge sets and acacia garden tables.
  • Herbs and fruit: rosemary, thyme, sage and a fig or citrus in a pot turn it into a true southern European patio.

Setting up an Ibiza garden in 5 steps

1
See where the sun falls

On a sunny day, observe where the sun is in the morning, afternoon and evening. Choose the spot for your seating area and decide whether you need shade there.

2
Choose a light base

Choose white, off-white or sand for the large surfaces: furniture, cushions, parasol and rug. Then pick one or two accent colours, such as terracotta and olive green.

3
Place one set at the centre

Choose a low lounge or lounge-dining set in acacia white wash, wicker or rope. Measure your terrace first and leave room all around to walk. The selection guide helps if you're unsure.

4
Arrange shade

Place a parasol in white or ecru that's large enough for your seating area. A cantilever parasol for a lounge set, a pole parasol for a small table or on the balcony.

5
Finish with plants and light

Place terracotta pots with olive, lavender and grasses around the seating area, lay a natural outdoor rug and add warm light with lanterns or fairy lights.

  • Natural and woven materials: wood, wicker, rope and coconut
  • Low and comfortable seating
  • Mediterranean plants in large pots

Common mistakes

Too many colours at once

Turquoise, pink, orange and yellow on one terrace makes it restless. Keep the base light and choose no more than two accent colours.

Natural rattan in the rain

Real rattan isn't made to stay outside. For a terrace without a canopy, choose wicker, rope or wood that is suitable for outdoor use.

Mediterranean plants in wet soil

Lavender, rosemary and olive don't cope well with wet feet. Make sure there is good drainage in the pot and in the border.

No place for the cushions

Sand-coloured and white cushions look their best if you store them dry when it rains and in winter. Also read tips for storing garden cushions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Ibiza garden style?

The Ibiza garden style brings the relaxed atmosphere of the Balearic Islands to your terrace. White and sandy base tones, woven materials such as wicker and rope, light wood such as whitewashed acacia, terracotta pots and Mediterranean plants such as olive and lavender. It feels light, airy and a little like a holiday.

Which colours suit an Ibiza garden?

White, off-white, sand and beige form the base. Terracotta, olive green and a touch of blue are the accents. Keep the large areas light and add colour with pots, cushions and plants, so you can easily change the look later.

What is the difference between an Ibiza garden and a Mediterranean garden?

They look alike and share plants such as olive, lavender and rosemary. An Ibiza garden is lighter and airier, with lots of white and sand and a lounge feel. A Mediterranean garden is often warmer in colour, with more terracotta, ochre tones, darker wood and a large dining table as the centrepiece.

Which plants suit the Ibiza style?

Olive tree, lavender, rosemary, ornamental grasses, fig and palms in pots all fit well. They like sun and free-draining soil or potting compost. Bougainvillea adds colour but is not hardy and must be kept frost-free in winter. Protect an olive in a pot from severe frost.

Is the Ibiza style suitable for a small garden or balcony?

Yes. A compact set such as the Talara for 2 people, a natural outdoor rug, a few terracotta pots with lavender or an olive, and a small ecru parasol are enough. Keeping colours light makes a small space look larger.
